Is a 2wd transmission different from a 4wd transmission?

Is there a difference between the transmission in my 4x4 bronco and my 2wd ranger? They are the same year and everything and i was going to rebuild the rangers transmission to have an extra for the bronco but i dont know if they are compatible. I understand the 4x4 has a transfer case etc but i know nothing about the trannys. Any help?

Yes. The output shafts are different, the piece that bolts to the end of case is different, in your year they may well not even be the same trans. There were TK and FM transmissions that year.
