is there a way to hook up an ipod to the rear of the stock head unit? running that thing through a tape adapter is getting old.

With the proper head unit? yes.

Through your exsisting head unit? Likely not.

I think there is a kit somewhere that enables you to run through a factory unit but not positive

i've seen a way to do this, but it disables the function to play a CD, there may be a different way though.

Check out PAC-Audio.

Their iPAC-OEM might be compatible with your radio. You would also need the correct plug for your 98 Ranger AB-FRD20.

I have used many PAC products and I have never been disappointed. Contact them before buying but it should work

I bought new identical Sonys for my wifes car and my truck with 1/8" plugs and USB slots on the front and MP3 capable CD drives--on the rare occasion I drive her car, I don't need to figure it out. I tried the tape adapter for a couple of years, tried the FM tranmitter deal, and tried using the rear CD changer RCA plugs which it didn't recognize without the rest of it plugged in. Crutchfield sells it with everything you need.
