Hi, and thanks for the wealth of knowledge on here.
We picked up a 1987 Ranger XLT with the 2.9 and 5 speed manual last year as a knock around truck for runs to Home Depot and the like. We got it with 224 thousand miles (according to the previous owner), and have just put on it 2200 since then.
Prior to us picking it up he had changed out the plugs and wires. We had to have the timing adjusted for it to pass smog last year. Since then I haven't messed with anything on the engine other than to change the oil.
Randomly while driving it'll get what feels like a miss - if you're at idle, it will noticeably roughen and eventually stumble and die if you don't hold the accelerator down some. If you're cruising it feels like a sudden loss of power. In either case, it will remain regardless of throttle position for 15 seconds or so, then bounce back to normal like nothing ever happened.
I'm scratching my head a bit here as I haven't had a ranger in 10 years and it was a '94 with the 4.0 there.
Thanks for any suggestions!
