the guy says it has a broken axle shaft and has manual hubs and is ok to drive for now but how much do you guys think it would cost?

Hmmm, as far as I know, if you break a rear axle in a Ranger, that dang tire just falls off (axle slides out). So, it must be a front axle. As for a price, I really don't know. Around here, for the truck, 8-900 maybe? Maybe alittle more. Just a guess off the top of my head. Don't know how accurate that is..

to fix the axle? i got one from a j/y for $20 i pulled it. the other yards wanted anywhere from $30 to $100 for it.

take it with a grain of salt, if it has a broken FRONT axle shaft then obviously it was being beaten on in 4wd....might be other problems that are overlooked....

not all the time. if it had a bad joint that was neglected it could snap the ears on the axle.
