I figure this is gonna be a hard one to diag over the net but what the hell.

a couple months ago I moved my GF back in with me about 700 miles, with a full bed an a small enclosed trailer (8*6?) also full.

temp outside was from 80-100* that day.... IM sure you are already shaking... about half of the trip was montains.

it boiled over a few times so we stopped to let it cool and top off the coolant as needed.

a week later I noticed a HISSSSS from the rad after I went to home depot, open the hood and CRAP radiator has a crack, wont hold pressure.

minimal driving for a week while keeping it topped off, then I install a junkyard radiator.

new radiator seems to hold pressure just fine, temp is way lower and everything seems peachy... untill the next time i drive it.

needless to say it looked like I ran a couple cans of seafoam, and it just kept on bealching smoke.

now I knew that the loose intake was a known issue with this truck so for shits and giggles I checked the bolts, no where near the spec, so I tightened up the ones I could reach (again not to spec, but not loose) and go figure it smokes 1/10 of what it was before, and only in little tantrums, not all the time.

It DOES go through about a qt every 3500 miles or so, but I always attributed that to its age/miles

I've purchised some intake gaskets and I'll install them in the morning but what do you guys think? sat afternoon think it'll still smoke or think it's be peachy again?

Im 100% sure its coolant, Im familiar with the smell.

93 4.0 just rolled 200k

From what you've said, I'd say its leaky intake gaskets. It seems to be pretty common for the lower intake gasket to foul/be fouled around the same time those bolts start to loosen up.

Yeah that sounds like the source of your problem. I wouldn't worry too much about the oil consumption either, a little bit is ok. Just keep an eye on it.

almost done getting it apart... figure thats all the hard part right?

:P

its all loose, trying to get one last cable off (I think its the crank sensor) its a PITA though.

needed to come in and relax a bit before I finish up... I might have to go crack head on this one and go non stop until 2AM

got it back together... make oh man was the intake full of oil/grime got most of it out with a toothbrush and some carb cleaner..

put it all back together and let it prime until i didnt hear bubling in the tank (about 15-20 turns of the key) and it fired right up, no smoke.

unfortunally now its leaking some fuel from around the fuel rail... guess i know what im doing today :|

Good to hear you got it taken care of! And yeah, it's a Hawk.

Also, I'm right across the bay from you in Hayward.

No, I'm not on BARF... I haven't really been out on the bike much in a while, the GF moved down here from Alameda last month and I'm busy with work. I'd like to though. If I don't soon though, I'll probably just commence tear down for the winter since I have some plans for it.

Fix the leaky head gaskets, rebuild the forks, maybe a new rear shock/brakelines and generally clean it up... Maybe more :)

good stuff! Im about to redo the shocks/forks on my ZZR need something a bit better suited to my weight and goign 2up

maybe next winter I'll crack the cases, its poping out of first when I really get on it, and 2nd it know to be weak, replace whats needed and a little preemptive.. figure swap all the bearings pistons and studs. I plan on putting about 5-8 lbs downs its throat :P
