Like the title says, I am in need of replacing the upper intake gasket on my 2000 4.0. It has been idling pretty rough lately and running rich, so I took it to a shop since I really haven't had much time to play with it. They did some looking around and determined the gasket was going. Pretty much just sprayed some liquid around the seams and it started boggin, sucking in the fluid etc... they said.

Anyway, they are looking for 200 - 250 to replace it. I've looked in the manual and checked on the cost if I were to just buy the gasket. Much cheaper.

So my question is, has anyone changed this before and is it something that will take a while? I'm planning on doing it this weekend but thought I'd check. To me the 200+ $$ seems a bit high just for a gasked replacement.

Any info is appreciated.

:icon_cheers: Thanks,

na 200 is about right, its time consuming, but a normal mechanic should have it done in 2-3 hours, but they will milk it out to get the labor.

IF your mechanically inclined, go for it. Just take your time. And make sure you torque to spec. I'm sure others will have some input here as well.

yeh do some searches around. Its a pretty common issue. I have done it twice. Are you just replacing the gasket that goes between the fuel rain and the upper black plastic intake?

Thanks for the input. Yes, just between the intake, it's in plain sight when looking from the passenger side, if that makes sense. They showed me where they wiped it clean and sprayed. He did mention it is a common problem.

I have a 99, and did my heads. The upper gasket intake gasket is almost trival. If you do the lower one, I would recommend getting the one piece gasket, not the two piece.

Pick up a Haynes book for torque specs and sequences, but be aware that some of the sequences are BACKWARDS. Always torque starting at the center and working outwards in a spiral. If the diagram shows something else, it's probably backwards.
