What do you guys think is more thorough chilton haynes or some other brand i have not heard of?

I am not impressed by the Hanyes one we have for our 99. Haven't seen Chiltons. Anymore I just look for factory service manuals used.

Factory manuals are definitely the way to go
Or alldatadiy

yep Ebay

Don't know what year Ranger you have and that can make a difference. For my 87 BII the main service manual doesn't have engine info so I had to get the engines and emissions book. Then a separate book for wiring and wiring diagrams. My 02 Explorer it was just two books. Ford is kind of a pain. Our 94 Jeep one book had everything.

Factory service manuals, Alldata or Mitchell is the way to go.

That said, I have a Haynes or Chilton manual for every vehicle I own. Some of them came with the vehicle when I bought it, some I bought myself. I learned long ago that they're only really good for torque specs and sopping up spilled oil. Chiltons is a little more in-depth, but lacks a lot of pictures. Haynes has more pictures but less detail. And the wiring diagrams in either flat out suck. I spent some time studying to be an electrical engineer and the diagrams look to me like they were drawn by a kid with a crayon - half the stuff you could stand to know is just not there.

Mostly I rely on my knowledge I've gained over time, this site, and when I need a good wiring diagram, I'm on friendly terms with a few garages to get a peek at Alldata or Mitchell. I'd love to have my own subscription to one of those two but...

Most every year of Ford manuals will have at least 3 books, one for mechanical, one for emissions (but that book covers all models of the year) and one for wiring. Some have two service manuals for the mechanical stuff for a total of 4 books.

Anybody have a link to an electronic version (.pdf) of the mechanical FSM for an '86? I have the EVTM and would like to know more about the original setup for the A/C.
Thanks,
