Installing bearings

I need to replace the side bearings on my carrier and do not have access to a press, has anyone tried the heat method? My plan is to use an old oven to heat the bearings to about 200F and then tap them on. Any thoughts or experience out there to help me?

First gear install I did I never had a press. Yes you can do it this way, just make sure you don't hit the cage of the bearing because you'll tweak it. Cheers

I didn't heat my bearings, just threw the carrier in the freezer for a couple hours. They should tap on pretty easily. The much harder part for me was removing the old bearings!

use a brass punch. you shouldn't need heat

only strike the inner race and drive it on evenly

I agree you can do with no heat. But wouldn't it be the race that seats against the carrier that you hit, in this case the outer race?

not sure what you're saying. im talking about the race on the bearing itself, the outer race is a separate piece

the inner ring underneath the rollers/cage. this part is hardened and solid and by striking this part you won't damage the bearing cage

No, you want the carrier to be smaller and the bearings to be bigger. heat=bigger, cold=smaller.

I usually use the old carrier bearing inner race and a block of wood to pound them on. I have access to a press and still find it easier to just hammer them on.

I set mine on the floor, right in front of the press, and pounded em on.
