I have a '97 ranger with the i4, it's an auto but it annoys me that i cant see my revs. I don't want a big tach with a shift light that's obviously unnecessary but autozone and the like sell little tachs in pods and was wondering what these take to install.

usually all that is involved with an aftermarket tach install (autometer the like) is mount the gage, have a 12 volt supply (preferably off the light switch) and ground for the dash lights. the other is your tach input wire, which on your 97 reading in the tech library (go to tech section, scroll to ignition systems and tach install is listed) you splice it to the tan with yellow stripe wire off the pcm. pcm is located on the passenger side firewall. they also have listed where there is a wire run thru the firewall to the cluster, just remove the cluster then tie it in there. check out the tech section it has illustrations and the like.

sweet, i guess i shoulda looked in the tech linrary my bad, that is way easier than i was anticipating

so after after reading the tech article, is splicing into the pcm all you would really have to do to monitor other things as well?

Or you could just get a dash cluster with a tach in it.

yes thats all thats involved as the money comes i will be changing all my gages over to autometer gages (my speedo/odo are the only ones that work, and the speedo jumps from broken gears) and ive been looking into all of it. ill even be doing the digital speedo conversion to my truck (no more fkn cable to act stupid).
