I have an Auburn gear limited slip to be put into my open 7.5 rear end. I've had this thing for awhile now, and haven't had the time or money to do anything with it yet.

Calling around, the average price to get it installed is about $250-300(one shop quoted $500). Is this a reasonable price to pay for this?

Is this a fairly extensive process for someone who hasn't done it before? Is it worth trying on my own, or more headache than its worth? Probably the most extensive work I've done, is rebuild the top end of motors(to include pulling and replacing them in the car).

$250-$300 for the install of the locker is a pretty good deal. Doing the swap yourself would require certain tools and alot of in and out of the pinion and ring gear. Plus having a shop do the work and if they screw up the install and don't get the depths, backlash and meshing of the gears right they could be the ones who buy you a new ring and pinion set. I just did a 03 FX4 that chewed up the ring gear because the pinion bearing failed and I got $375 for rebuilding the whole rearend. That job took me 7 hours to do.
