I've been having this problem, and I figure maybe someone on here can help.

I sleep maybe 4 times a week. Usually, I only sleep every other night for about 6-7 hours, and on the off days I get maybe an hour if I'm lucky. Last week I woke up on Wednesday and didn't sleep again until Friday night, and then I slept for like 18 hours. It takes me forever to fall asleep, and when I do sleep, I usually wake up 4 or 5 times a night. That's always happened to me, but usually it was for no apparent reason.

Lately I've been having more nightmares, and I've started jumping when I get surprised in a dream, kicking when I dream I'm running, and stuff like that. The weird thing is, I don't really feel tired anymore when I don't sleep. I feel more alert than usual, but like my brain has slowed down.

Does anybody have this problem, and if so, what did you do about it?

i have the same problem. i havent been to a doctor about it. it might be worth a trip

ambient CR..... or in my case (cause i'm broke as a joke) 2 excedrin pm's and a shot of NyQuil

i had a similar problem a couple of years back when i went away to university. i wouldnt sleep cause i was stressed and it would take me forever to fall asleep if i did. my solution, smoke a j. worked like a charm, makes me super sleepy and i would wake up feeling rested. hated that feeling of being a walking zombie and not being able to pay attention. anytime now that i feel myself getting stressed or cannot seem to fall asleep, i just go and smoke a tiny one and go to bed.

you should also consider maybe doing an evaluation of your surroundings and what/if anything is happening in your life that would cause this condition. maybe work, family life or other problems are subconsciously effecting your sleeping patterns. good to go see a doctor (gp) and get a referral to a specialist, whether it be a shrink or a sleep specialist.

good luck!

Tylenol PM does the trick for me. I just take one, if I take 2, I wake up groggy

No more talk about illegal substances please.

For me, if I don't get to hit the weights I get like that. After almost 30 years of it I get cranky and restless if I don't get my exercise.

I'm like Will....If I don't get a good hour and 30 minutes worth of weights, I can't sleep. I suggest working out like of son of a, or getting laid. Those both tend to make me pass out easily. :D

sorry. he asked for advice. but i really dont see how telling him to smoke a joint is much different then someone else telling him to combine over the counter drugs to induce sleep or take sleeping pills. unless of course that person has access to a pharmaceutical reference guide to look up possible contraindication for the drugs combined and which can be safely consumed together. mind you, using otc drugs is much safer to induce a state of coma/sleep then say smoking some pot.

exercise is good as well, but if your like me, exercise and bedtime equals no sleep. i exercise in the morning when i get up.

Why are you still talking about it when you were told to stop? If you don't see the difference between that and over the counter medication then I think you've been taking your own advice a little too much....

actually, i was a) defending my statement and voicing my opinion and b) was comparing the fact that telling someone to smoke a joint and telling someone to combine otc drugs are both just options/opinions. i can see where saying, "...go smoke a joint." can be conceived as bad advice, but so can telling someone to go and take some sort of cocktail of pharmaceuticals... do you understand?? maybe you did not notice the advice following my first paragraph where i said that seeing a doctor for advice and possibly a specialist would be time well spent.

i am not advocating pot and the be all end all solution for all the worlds problems (thats a different topic on to itself), all i was doing was giving a opinion and some advice (and it is not like im saying to go drop a couple lines of coke or maybe some flunitrazepam (ie rohypnol)) if you and others are that narrow minded then so be it. maybe we should tell this person that he should try some sleep-ezee and a bottle of vodka for his problems... maybe that would be more acceptable.

it an opinion and i have the right to voice it. kinda like assholes, everyone has one.

try rubbin one out

Well, here in Colorado we have LEGAL medical marijuana under our state constitution.....and compared to most sleeping drugs it has way less side effects and is a much safer sensible option.

As said before hit the weights during the day and youll sleep better at night.

Not sure if RLS (restless leg syndrome) counts as insomnia, but I can't sleep if I get a bout of RLS until I get up and stretch my legs for about five minutes...

Stretching (not as in a torture chamber stretch rack) gets your blood flowing and relaxes the muscles...so if you don't know a good simple stretching routine there are tons of references on-line...

Other tips that I've read include going to bed at the same time if possible (shift work dsisrupts your natural (circadian rhythm sleep pattern))...avoid alcohol, caffeinated drinks, fruit sugars (don't eat fruit or drink juice two hours before you plan to sleep) and spicy foods...

Walking or other mild exercise (like sex, as long as you don't swing from chandeliers or entertain a dozen mates at once) can help induce sleep...as would warm drinks like herbal teas or even warm milk...
