Topping other hybrids in this category, the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid is able to propel itself on electric power from its nickel hydride battery at up to 47 mph.

It's an interesting concept, but all that means is that eventually the engine has to run to recharge the battery. It's another almost there moment for one of the Big 3. They change a computer setting on the vehicle and then someone thinks it's innovation. Maybe they could develop a new hybrid system instead of sucking on the Toyota teat and tweaking settings.


I think it's time for the engineers and designers at Ford to start building the cars instead of the accountants and marketing people.
 
It is a neat idea, they have generated a lot of interest at the dealership my brother works at, as well as the new normal Fusion.
 
hybrids are a band-aid, an expensive, complicated one. Make the engine a little more efficient and hope that diesels start to get popular in a few years. A diesel in a small car is going to outrun, outperform, and out mpg any hybrid. They really gotta get their heads outta their asses on this one.

The idea behind hybrids is a gradual step over to electric cars. They are not really about fuel economy per say. It is just a step to acclimate the general public to the idea of electricity powering automobiles. It is also a good way for auto makers to test electrical systems in the real world.
 
Hybrids are a joke. A turbo diesel would kill any hybrid and it's really more efficient. Plus, the batteries wear out over time, so something will have to be done with the batteries once they are toast and it's not cheap to replace batteries where as a diesel lasts forever.

Diesels are not cheap to repair either.

With all the electronics on them they have the same weaknesses as a gas engine... electronics. However both are very capable of outliving their vehicle.

The big killer is getting diesels thru emissions, that is where the it loses the contest, they produce nastier exhaust gasses than a gas engine.

A diesel Jetta gets about the same milage as a comparable four door hybrid. But the hybrid burns a cheaper fuel.
