my "Good" computer is a 2.66GHz P4 operating on Win 2000pro.

Someone gave me a new "better" motherboard, but somewhere in transit
(he left the MoBo unattended at work) someone walked away
with the CPU, fan & heatsink.

So much for the upgrade I've been anticipating since September...

Anyone have a loose Athalon XP 3000+ CPU?

I look at the prices people look to get for them on ebay ~$40
with horror and disgust, because I can't see spending $40
on a motherboard I'm not sure will work.

Basically I need to Upgrade from 2000 to XP
and I don't believe my computer is fast enough to
run XP without driving me stark raving mad.

I have a Valid XP CoA for this "new" motherboard, but without a CPU...

So I either need to track down another CPU for the motherboard I have
OR find (Cheap/Free) another MoBO/CPU WITH a Valid XP CoA

Anyone have any old junk that I might regard as solid gold?

Your computer should be fine for XP. We had it running alright on an old Dell with (I think) a 550MHz Pentium 3 with 256MB RAM. It originally had Windows 98 on it.

+2

xp is very good with not taking up too many resources (unlike vista). a 2.66ghz setup is more than enough. I used to run xp on a 1.6ghz p4 and it was great.

Yeah, but running XP without a CoA is a real bitch...

And while I have one (For XP-Home) for the Athalon XP MoBo I don't have a CPU...

And I have yet to see a "patch" to make XP work without a CoA,
so putting XP on my current machine isn't happening without an
unused XP CoA...

And while I can get an official copy for $80-ish...

Oops prices have fallen since I last looked...
Looks like $30's for an unused XP

I don't know all of what you are talking about, but my old computer runs much better on XP than it did on 3.1/95/98. And I didn't need to load any drivers.

Was the AXP mobo from a prebuilt system? if not the COA will still work, you just have to call in for activation, and it may work even if it was from an OEM maker (never tried that one though)

It was a H-P 735 and yeah I could just reactivate it... IF I had a CPU...

But I do not.

Failing that I could put XP on my current system, but I don't
have a CoA that won't cause issues.

Yeah I've never tried it with a pre-built oem key on a new motherboard. Too bad i chucked an old Athlon I had, I'd of sent it to ya, all I got left is an 850 duron

This is where I'm confused, the COA for this "new" motherboard. Is this board an OEM (from a dell, HP, ect)? If not the COA will work on any machine. Sorry I just can't keep track of what's what here lol.

If you have a stand-alone (retail) version of XP, your CoA/key will work more than once.

even an OEM copy that you purchase yourself (not one that came with a prebuilt pc) will work more than once, you just have to call Microsoft to activate it. I'm on my second motherboard on my OEM vista and my OEM XP has been through about 4 different systems.

I know, I was just putting that out there as an aside.

I've built several using the same OEM XP as I've upgraded mobos or hard-drives. Need to do a hard-drive upgrade on two of my lappys sometime soon, still farting around with 20GB drives in my Dells and they're getting full.

i may have a chip i can send your way. I will look at what is in my chip collection.

Sorry I looked only have intel chips threw away a box of chips a few weeks ago that had a few AMD chips in.
