So I was looking under my truck yesterday trying to figure out my fuel system. I noticed there's a round filter looking thing in the frame rail. The system is laid out like this, starting with the tank.
Tank, into a round thing, into a inline, into the fuel filter, and then into the rail.
Sorry for all the confusein, I just want to figure this out.

Heck... I live in a state of confusion.

But anyhow. On my 94 it comes out of the tank into an inline fuel filter canister mounted to the inside of the left frame rail then it switches from plastic line at the frame to a braided steel line to the fuel rail. From the fuel rail there is a pressure regulator that feeds a smaller braided line that back at the frame turns into a smaller plastic line and returns to the tank. I only have the screen on the pump inside the tank and the canister filter on the frame rail.

From your description it sounds like someone may have cut in an additional filter.

What engine is in the '83?

Does it have fuel injection or carb?

The "filter looking thing" is a filter, either cartridge or screw on, like an oil filter.

The "other round thing" is a second fuel pump, check to see if it has an electrical connector.

Completely different beast.

The 86-88 had a fuel sump in line for when the high pressure pump kicks up faster than the tank pump, but I can't think why a carb'd model would need one.

Does your ranger have dual fuel tanks? Could be something for a tank selector system. My 84 Ranger had dual tanks and if I remember correctly had some sort of canister or something of that nature on the frame rail part of that selector system I think, it was a carbureted 2.8L so who knows since it came from California and their weird emissions stuff LOL.

FACEPALM

That's why the carbed one would have it. It takes the place of the selector valve that would be in a twin tank system so they only had to make one set of lines.

I did know that.

Yep and one you can take off the bowl for filter and the other not. Says on it DO NOT UNSCREW. There is a thread bout 3-4 yrs old you and I and a few others went there. Probably be found in search mode as " fuel canister".

It an 83' an as a 4.0 swap. I just didn't know if all the fuel stuff was of a late model or factory from 83.

That helps.

Sounds like the tank is wrong, and has an internal pump, or your "round thing" is an aftermarket inline pump.
