Well, my Ranger project went on hiatus. I resurrected it, starting with the engine. I started putting the shortblock together and realized that some of the caps have the bearing shell "tangs" on the same side, and some on the opposite side (with the way I put it up). On further investigation the engine had been rebuilt before and the caps and rods are stamped with the cylinder they came from (didn't notice when I took it apart). The stampings on each piece are on the same side with the tangs are on the same side.

So question is, are the bearing shell tangs supposed to be on the same or opposite sides?

according to the picture in MY BOOK and from my own experience the tang's should be on the same side, either way when you build a motor it is common practice to stamp the bearing caps on the same side
