I bought a 2002 Ranger that had a bad motor and planned on rebuilding it. The only key that they gave me when I bought it was a regular (non chip) key but it worked and the truck started. I recently found a 2003 with a good motor but damage to the cab and front fenders from a slow roll over and bought it.
I just finished the motor swap but now the 2002 will not start and the THEFT light is flashing. I have heard that if the battery is disconnected for a certain amount of time that you need the chip key start it again.
The 2003 came with a chip key so I am wondering if I can just change the ignition and use the key from the 2003 or ?????
Any suggestions before I go to Ford? (I read that these are expensive to replace)
Thanks

A chip key from a dealer is a little over $100. The key is about $45 but then you have an hour of labor for the mechanic to drink coffee and watch the computer program the key. I had to have that done when I lost one...on the 2002 Ranger I used to have.

In a nutshell, if you have two chip keys and want a third, you can buy the key and program it yourself. If you only have one key (or none) then you're SOL and have to go to a Ford dealer to have the key programmed.

From what I understand many locksmiths now have the equipment to program them too. Just not sure if they are cheaper than the dealer but its worth checking.

$45/key plus $70 programing, I hope that is what it is. I just do not understand why I was able to start it before with the regular non-chip key. Tech told me to try cycling the key 3 time to reset it but didn't really think that would do it. I'll give it a try though.
