:bawling:am second owner of '93 ranger pulled out of a field after 4 years of collecting dust and what have ya. question is i have replaced all sensors and timing chain and gears. and i still have an ignition knock above moderate acceleration. wait only sensor i have not changed oil pressure. other thing is thought i had a fuel delivery issue so replaced filter, regulator, and some injectors i acquired from wreckin yard. any ideas????????????????

Four years after "collecting dust" makes me think the you could have some sediment in the gas tank...could be clogging the lines and possibly the new filter now...

Maybe plugs and wires...coils or distrubtor

Lotsa carbon in the cylinders will do that, too...try running some seafoam through it....or just start using premium gas.

okay, My appologies, before starting truck (when i got her....trailered home) pulled tank, dumped contents, pressure washed, reinstalled, fresh fuel, and filter. have completed three bottles of sea foam (not at the same time). replaced head gaskets last summer due to pass head gasket leak into cylinder. other than tiny "pits" at top of cylinder all looked good. intake runners were dry, plugs then and now are dry. even went to E3 plugs. Am thinking of a reman dist.................
other problem i'm having that i thought i had corrected is no start situations. thought it was FPIS (inertia switch) bought yesterday installed this am, went to leave work this even and a no start. no pressure in fuel rail. never been able to hear/feel fuel pump "running". acts like "vapor lock" (official temp today 112 degrees). any thoughts on this????
BTW thank you for the input.

If by ignition knock you mean pinging, then try retarding your timing a little and see if that fixes it.

You should be able to turn the key on and with nothing else making noise hear the fuel pump run, it has to prime and build & hold pressure before it will start. Next time it does not start try turning the key to on & give it 15 seconds or so, and repeat several times before you try to crank the engine over, If it starts right up you confirmed the fuel pressure issue, or get a fuel pressure gage and see what is going on. As for the ignition knock, get rid of the E3 plugs, Motorcraft or Autolites work the best in these 3.0's, and you need to check the timing as mentioned, if it has a mechanical centrifugal advance maybe one of the springs is broken or the hook rusted off.

and i still have an ignition knock above moderate acceleration.

Does this engine have an EGR valve?

other problem i'm having that i thought i had corrected is no start situations.no pressure in fuel rail.

I doubt vapor lock in this engine since the pump is located in fuel tank and it's fuel injected. If you're getting no pressure at fuel rail you'll have to trace if blockage upstream of pump, failed pump, or no electrical to pump. If you drained and flushed the tank with new filter then I doubt the filter is blocked. I'd confirm power to pump first. If you're getting a "knock" at moderate speed and it's related to low fuel pressure then fuel starvation could be producing a lean burn, which is hard to ignite. Are you getting loss of power or just knock/ping? How's the idle?

To start with changed fuel pump and assy. truck would not start just prior to change, truck now starts. chk'd all wires at f.p.i.s. and pump, connections clean, no broken wires. As far as e.g.r. not this truck. double cat, which has been updated with a single fat cat. But like I stated earlier "thought i had the problem solved when i changed the F.P.I.S. then about 10 days later left me stranded at the job. so I'am leary that problem is still there just (head scratch)

Dont rule out Fuel pressure problems until you have put a gage on it to verify, just because you changed the pump does not mean the new one is working as it should. Put a gage on it then you will know where your at. Another item to check is the fuel pump relay, they too can give problems like you describe by not energizing the pump.

update: have had no start issues since fuel pump replaced. went ahead and replaced fuel pump relay, for piece of mind. Thank you folks for the input.
