Ranger's getting old and worn out. Along with a few things that wear out, one of them is the ignition cylinder lock (or key tumbler). Essentially, a few times I have started the Ranger without inserting the key. And managed to pull the key out while the engine is running. My question is that will replacing the Ignition Cylinder Lock fix this problem? Or is something else wearing out in the steering coloum that allow this happen.

If it is the Ignition Cylinder Lock, I have two options. A) Get a new one from Advance Auto Parts with key ($15); or B) Get one from the Ford parts counter and set the tumblers to my key ($110). The price difference is steep, but I really would hate to start using two keys since I'm use to using only one key.

My 97 did exactly the same thing,I bought the replacement from pep boys.It was cheap and I don't mind two keys.of course i don't have the $ to go to the dealer. It fixed the problem.I had no other issues with the column.

I just replaced my lock cylinder a couple weeks ago. I was having the same type of problem. The plastic guide slot on the side of the column would just flip around and around and the lock position would not work properly.

I just got the $15 replacement from O'Reilly's. Now I have two keys, but it's okay, because the ignition key has a black molded tab on the end, so I can quickly distinguish it from the door key. IMO, that $95 difference seems a big price to pay for the small convenience of having only one key. If you can get a lock cylinder that comes with a key that looks different enough from the one you have, it's not a big deal. Or just get a different looking blank and copy it.

pffft, you people are complaining about 2 keys? us 1st gen guys have 2 keys anyways, one for door other for ignition, not to mention the little switch under the colum we gota press to release the key!

Yes, I remember that on my dad's 91 Ranger.

Know what, I'm broke. Guess I will have to go the 2 key route. I will go get 2 remakes of the keys that are straight metal. That should keep the key ring size down.

Thanks for the quick replys. Makes me feel better that it will be an easy and cheap fix.

Go get a cylinder lock from the junkyard and swap tumbblers in that. Its jsut as good as a new one, and much cheaper.

I would do that, except the tumblers are shot too.

Got the new Ignition Key Lock Cylinder from Advance Auto Parts. WOW, what a difference in feel. No more slop, key stays in, and the chimes don't come on when the key is out of the cylinder. I will deal with the two combo for now. But if it annoys me enoungh, I will have the new cylinder re-keyed for my old key.

I have a bunch of tumblers. I can get you the ones to make your old locks match your new key. I just need your key code.

Don't know the key code. And what I want is the opposite (new lock to match old key).

I took apart the old key cylinder. There is 6 tumblers total. Isn't there a tumbler kit that I can buy?

You can take the key to the dealer and ask them to find it for you. They shouldn't charge you for that.

All my tumblers are from door lock kits. I'm not sure if those ones can be used to re-key an ignition lock or not. If you get me the tumbler codes I will send you a set of tumblers for free and you are free to try repairing the old lock.

I can just put them in an envelope and post them.

I'm happy. Took the old tumbler out and put then in the new cylinder lock. All my old keys do not work now, but the nice re-make spare of the orginal key does. So now I only have to use one key for the door and ignition. But also, I only have one key that works in the ignition. Better get some spares made before that key wears out too. In all, I am still happy. :yahoo:

Thanks adsm08 for your offer. It's all good now. Thanks thou :icon_thumby:

No problem dude. I get 6 of each tumbler with every lock kit I do and use maybe 3 or any given kind. I easily have 7 sets of each number tumbler in my tool box.

A lot of guys that run into that issue just get the doors re-keyed by your average locksmith.

is there number code on the door lock cylinder that Ford or a lock smith can use for making a new door lock key, if you buy a Ranger from someone that's lost key for the door
