Hello everyone,
ok let me start off with what is going on. I purchased this ranger with a few small issues for next to nothing, had a miss when idling bad enough that the entire engine is shaking. got it home and decided to do the normal stuff first such as plugs and wires fuel filter oil and filter flushed fuel tank. still no difference. decided to do timing belt since previous owner had no idea when it was last changed and the truck has around 210,xxx miles on it. to say the least it needed it. belt was cracked all the way around. long story short I lined up the cam mark and the oil pump marks properly my question comes into play here. with those 2 marks lined up the crank was lined up at 5°btdc would that cause my idle issues that I am seeing? this is with the old belt BTW not the new one I am installing. xant get the hb off.

p.s. sorry this post is long winded and please excuse if some of the wording is off. my phone is being a pita tonight...

With the cam and pump pointers aligned, the crankshaft pulley should indicate TDC. If you had the crankshaft pulley/damper removed, you would find that the keyway is at 12:00.
Having a BTDC reading indicates to me that the timing is off. Five degrees is not a lot, maybe one tooth?, but it is not 'factory'. Perhaps someone was doing some 'development' work trying to get better performance? Both the ignition and cam timing would be a little advanced from normal. It may cause idle problems as the computer is 'set' to operate properly with the cam & sensor timed properly, based on the crank at TDC.
There are techniques for getting the crank pulley bolt loose. Stuffing rope in the cylinder, placing a manual in 4th gear & setting the parking brake, or using a long bar & socket on the bolt, with the bar against the frame or the ground & cranking the engine using the starter are all means to loosen the bolt. Removal of the pulley is standard messing around. Not fun if there's rust-belt salt corrosion, etc.

got the timing belt all done this morning already had the crank bolt off just could not get the hb to come loose from the shaft. got a 3 jaw puller at autozone this morning and was able to pop it off. timing is all set and it runs a bit better but not 100% so I'm going to do the mass air flow sensor cleaning, IAC cleaning and start checking other items aswell. luckily I don't have the ac or the power steering to worry about on this thing so it's easy to get to everything. BTW thank you for the reply tomw
