Hello, Ive bought a 85 ranger with a 4 banger and i am wanting to figure out what the engine is. The truck originally came factory with a 2.0, but i have reason to believe that the engine in it is not the original engine. the engine does not have the mechanical fuel pump opening cut into the block. the trans tunnel also has been cut to get to the bellhousing bolts which makes me think its been replaced even more. what do yall think? id figure an 85 ranger would have a mech. fuel pump but i dont know. thanks for any help.

My '89 block had the mechanical fuel pump hole in the block... I don't know about aftermarket blocks, but on the OE blocks they didn't stop having that hole until around '92, and the 2.0L was phased out in '90 in Canada ('88 in the US I believe) so it's most likely a 2.3L block

Describe to us the upper intake manifold.

Also, is the timing belt a square tooth or a round tooth profile?

Lastly, if you can figure out whether your oil pump is mounted in block, or in the oil pan, that will be one of the biggest identifiers of what year engine it is.

There is no upper intake. It's a 1 barrel carb. I have no clue about the timing gear or oil pump and won't be able to check till I can get back out to my friends land where it sits. All I know is that it has a 1 barrel carb(carter yfa?), no hole for the fuel pump, circle port exhaust, and has a duraspark distributor ( which would make me believe the oil pump is in the pan).

Sounds like it could very well be a 2.0. They came with a one bbl carb. Does the intake look like a tri-y configuration? 2 runners off the carb, and 2 runners of each of those to the head.?

ehehe, i bought a truck that said "2.0" in the ad, had a 2.0 round port intake and carb, no mech fuel pump hole and ran really bad... turned out to be a 2.3 efi block/head with the D port on the intake side... so thats why it ran like crap, round port intake off a 2.0 on a 2.3 d port head.. put a rebuilt 2.0 head on a 2.3 block and a weber 32/36 and it ran great.

judgeing by the lack of fuel pump hole, its gona be a 2.3 block. as far as head, the one who put it in may have had enough cells in the brain to have a matching head/intake combo. a dead give away is a roller cam, if its got one, its probly a 2.3
