My 99 4.0 is coming up on 120k mileage and concern has set in for my 5R55E. I know these transmissions are not bulletproof and Ford advertised a 100k mile service warranty which is absolute bullpoop.
Last year I dropped the pan and replaced the filter with a Wix kit. It seems to mostly behave but given the mileage of the truck I don't know how much time I really have. I've been brainstorming on some preventative measures to prolong the time before a rebuild or replacement.
First I am going to replace the trans oil cooler since that seems relatively inexpensive and easy to do.
Then I might install a flush kit on one of the soft lines leading to the trans oil cooler. I've been thinking it would make cycling old fluid out a little easier, even if it's maybe a gallon at a time. Not totally sure about this and I don't want a fluid leak disaster but still pondering it.
Any thoughts, suggestions?
