Hey guys I have a 1992 Ford Ranger XLT 2.3 and I've been having issues and I've been told I need to clean the idle air control valve but I'm having a problem removing it. It is not like most that I have seen that are on top this one is on the back and it is sideways. How would I get this thing off ?I cannot get my ratchet to fit under there too remove the bottom bolt.

Just take the whole throttle body off, that undoubtedly needs to be cleaned too and those 4 bolts are easily accessible. Just don't use brake or carb cleaner.

I fairly easily got a 1/4” ratchet behind mine when I changed it.

Cleaning the throttle body is a thing?

Well if you don't care about all the gunk inside it that can make your engine run like crap and cause the throttle to stick I suppose not...

Didn’t think gunk got up there. EGR comes after… a couple inches… I guess I could see gunky stuff swirling up to it.

PCV valve fresh air vent is on the intake tube, when the PCV valve clogs or flow is limited the flow reverses out of the vent side and crankcase gunk shoots into the throttle body.

Yep. A bit cruddy.

Is it worth cleaning the intake plenum/manifold? Mines filthy. How bout the intake ports and top of valves… if that’s possible without pulling the head apart.

I cleaned the TB and upper manifold. I didn’t think the TB was all that dirty, but there was quite a layer on everything. Used TB cleaner which really worked. Upper intake was filthy and now it looks nearly new. Didn’t risk snapping a bolt to get the lower intake cleaned.
