2.5L ('98-'01) IAC for 2.5 (motorcraft/hitachi)

so with the power off if you unplug it, and then start the truck will it idle?

If I turn the idle screw up a little, it will idle. With the IAC Connected?
It takes a long time to idle down from 2,000 rpm. The truck runs a lot better without the IAC connected.

I know it's 2026 and this is an older thread but I didn't want to start another "IAC for a 2000 2.5L" thread.
I've been looking for over 4 years, I've tried the "Hitachi ABV0016 Idle Air Control Valve" from Amazon but had the over rev issue when I pushed the clutch in so I reinstalled the Motorcraft IAC that was on the truck when I bought it.
A dealer part number search indicated the one on the truck (F87E-9F697-ED 01-18-00 3( Date Stamp?) isn't for the 2.5L engine but it's been on for years even before I bought the truck.
Unfortunately even after cleaning it twice now it's not working well anymore so I'm back on the hunt for a suitable replacement. Actually I've been looking since I bought the truck back in 2021 (I think) but now I'm looking more aggressively since it looks like I may have gotten all the life out of my current valve I'm going to.

Here's what I've found so far according to the local Ford Dealer right next door to me-

The applicable factory part numbers for the 2.5L Lima engines were- F5OE-9F715-AA or E9TE-9F715-A1A. The first number seems to be the more prevalent of the two when doing a search.

The updated number They gave me for the OEM is- CX1654 but that was a year or two ago so I can't confirm it's still the right part number. When I checked last night and today most places that still list CX1654 either show it as "Discontinued", "Out of Stock", or "Unavailable". I think Rock Auto had it last year but not anymore.

I just did another search and this Ai Overview came up. I'm not sure AI can be trusted but since I'm old and don't trust much of anything these days, here's the info copied and pasted-

"For a 2000 Ford Ranger 2.5L, the correct solenoid-type (two-wire) idle air control valve is generally designated as a pintle-type valve, often found under part number CX1686 (Motorcraft) or similar, such as the Standard Motor Products AC176 or Delphi CV10011. This solenoid style uses a PWM (pulse-width modulated) signal rather than a 4-wire stepper motor."

CX1686 is not the part number given to me by the Ford parts guy so one of them is wrong.
I'm going to do a new search with these two part numbers from the AI overview and see what comes up. If I find anything of value I'll post it here later.
(EDIT: As pointed out by lowspeedpursuit the part numbers in the copied and pasted AI search are not accurate and should not be used. I only left the info here so any replies would make sense. The description of the IAC is accurate though. At least it got that right).

This overview makes it seem like as long as the aftermarket part only has 2 wires it will work, but that's not true. Now to be fair; I did order the Hitachi IAC from Amazon so it could very well be a fake, nothing surprises me anymore.

If someone else has had better luck with the Hitachi ABV0016 from another vendor, or any other aftermarket IAC valve, please post any info. I'm sure there are still a bunch of us looking for the same thing, a damn IAC valve that actually works on our lil 2.5L FF Rangers.

I don't have an answer to the original question, but I wanted to pop in and agree that AI sucks and just makes stuff up all the time.

CX1686 doesn't even seem to be an IAC, much less the right one for your trucks.

Yea I did a search after posting here and found the same thing. The one parts guy at my local Ford dealer is pretty good at what he does so I trust him more than any half baked AI results any day.
Sorry everybody, I should have checked the info first before posting but I was tired and on my way to bed. The AI at least got the "pintle type" solenoid description correct.
Unfortunately for any one of us that has these trucks, Ford has decided to discontinue most of the critical components leaving us exposed to the often fake and poor quality aftermarket parts sources.
If I ever manage to find a reputable source for the right IAC valve, I'll post back here, but I'm not confident there is one anymore.
If anyone is actually in the parts manufacturing industry or set up to reverse engineer these IAC valves there's a fairly lucrative market just waiting for a good, reliable American made part. Just a thought.

I need to get all my spare parts together and figure out the idle on my '90, the dumb thing lives on the IAC, stalls when unplugged (no start either) but when plugged in idles at 2-3k, occasionally dropping down to 1500 or 1000 or could stall, you never know...
