So tonight me and a buddy took my ranger out for a ride. We got a bit of snow today in the towns but in the mountains got a good bit more. In fresh snow or packed the ranger stuck to the road pretty well even with the open diff. Even my buddy who is all about his full size truck was impressed with how well the little ranger did. To be honest it even surprised me a bit. Just thought id share

Yeah, even on the same tires it's a fact: a Ranger sticks to the road better.

I drove my 2WD 2.0 Ranger with 3.73 gears just about everywhere...even sideways up an ice-covered road for ½ mile one night...just got on the "hump" of the road and kept it going sorta sideways until I hit dry pavement...and with a bit of weight and some 225/75/15s on the back I could climb slick hills that even FWD vehicles couldn't...

They can be great...with a bit of practice...

I slid into a bus (coming up to a stop-light) doing about 8 mph because my back tires were bald. My '99 Ranger (with new tires) still struggles in the snow, even when it's in 4x4. Gotta add some weight in the truck bed or I'm scared to go out.

I've never had a problem with my 2wd Ranger. A few hundred pounds of sand in the bed, some 235/75R15 Winterforce tires, and I can go just about anywhere I want.

Only time I ever got stuck was in a parking lot, ice with about 8" of sugary snow on it, then a hard 2" crust on top of that. I was actually going good until I stopped, then with no momentum I couldn't do anything, if I wouldn't have stopped I would have been fine, but there was a rather large snowbank on the other side that I didn't want to try to plow through.

I just tried to go up pillar mountain in mine. its a dirt road that is an inch of ice with 5 inches of snow on it.

my truck has 100 lbs of wood and my two 70 lb dogs in the bed running studded snow tires.

did very good got about half way up until the snow got too deep on an uphill incline and the studs couldnt get enough bite to overcome the snow, so I started spinning and sliding backwards. I cut the wheel all the way over and spun it slowly around and got it pointed downhill and inched down pretty slowly.

if I had mattracks it would go anywhere.

Definitely, rangers are incredibly stable if you drive em right. They hold the road nice even when its real rough, and surprisingly well in slick conditions.

My ranger impressed me tonight... We got about 30-45 cm (12 to 18 in) and it was drifting around pretty good with 80km an hour winds all day. So I got off at 7 had a big snowbank at the end of the driveway, hit it in 4hi and no probs. Then later hit a trail that no one had broken yet, and for the next 5k or so pushed snow up the top of the bumper in 2nd gear 4lo. First time with mud terrains in snow too, very impressed with the deep snow traction. Stopping is another story though. I really dislike Abs.

Momentum is key with snow if you're fairly stock. Decent tires help a lot too. I am running open diffs right now in both trucks and get around pretty good. I can even go most places the big Jeeps I wheel with...need a pull or winch occasionally but I'm the one with shovels, chain saw, etc when they get really stuck so it works out very well for everyone.

I was joking. My Ranger was a piece of trash unless it was in 4wd. My B2 is great though with it's nearly 50/50 weight balance.

i haven't had any problems with mine this winter so far i just haul around a 4x4 timber wolf atv .. i figured if i got stuck i'd have the atv to go get help or to aid in pulling the ranger out..:yahoo:

I have pulled a lot of people out of ditches near my cabin in Tahoe when it snows. most people really can't believe what my little ranger is capable of in the snow. One of many reasons why I love the thing.

when i frist got my 89 i had stock size MT's, and my stock gears/rear LS. and i was wheeling with guys with 35's,37's,38's,39's,and 40's. they were all locked front and rear. i kept pace in the 4ft snow in 4 hi.....the snow got up to 6ft deep and well i turned back. but the comments over the CB had my cracking up. my fav one was. "ah it looks like the little blue bastered is stuck in a drift, oh wait he backed out.....hes gonna charge it and get stuck" *30 seconds pass and its quite* "that little SOB made it through." explodes over the CB

rangers do ok in the snow...no better than any other light truck. a good AT or snow tire is required to get anywhere.

i could get further in the '86 2wd E-350 box van i drove for a freight company than i could with the ranger in 2wd. dually tires with plenty of weight on them, plus a gutless (for the weight of the vehicle) 302 w/ auto trans...that thing stuck to the snow.
