"I want to do crazy mod ( insert here,) but I have no money, how do I do it for suuuuper cheap"???

... Yes this is a spin off thread of something that was posted in another.
Sorry I couldn't resist. :D :D :D
( kinda curious on thread views/ replies this might get...) :icon_thumby:

But seriously, I am kicking around the idea of building a vehicle to compete/ enjoy in Drag Week. Just haven't decided what to throw my money at, and what to drag into the garage and start tearing into. :icon_welder:
Go to hotrod.com if you don't know what dragweek is all about.

Engines I have
429 CJ c6 auto ( stroker kit to 521 maybe)
355 SBC 700r4 auto

Vehicles I have access to that I can build:

1966 International Short bed step side pickup.
( thinking 60's gasser ... solid front axle and all... 429 install)

1984 ford ranger 4x4 standard cab longbed
(429 install in this also... smaller, Ford version of street outlaws farmtruck)

1986 Cutlass supreme ( Gbody)
(355 SBC)

1976 and 1977 Cutlass 442's
one has the factory 455 the other factory 403

1968 chevy c10 longbed pickup
thinking for 429 for this one also.

1996 Dodge ram Indy pace truck.
( thinking a 408 stroker with procharger...)

ive looked into a few super cheap engine builds, and from what ive seen, if you want cheap... bigger is better. i read an article online where they took a 351 from the junkyard, put aftermarket heads on it. then ran turbos at 40 psi (maxxed by the spring) on, stock internals and hit 1000+ hp.

honestly with that 429 and some cheap turbo stuffs from the junkyard/pull n save, i dont think a crazy amount of power would be hard to hit.

The 429 in stock factory trim as it came off the assembly line was 412HP 520TQ
so thats the base line starting point of that engine.
Add in today's go fast goodies...and tech advancements ( new heads, fuel injection..)
Power should NOT be a issue. But it is a very heavy engine/ transmission combo.
Compaired to the new LSX and Coyote engines.

Not a huge fan of turbos, I guess I am just to old school...that and I have never really messed with them much.
I am a NA kinda guy.... no power adders, except I might consider a procharger on the dodge....might.

I am really thinking about the 66 International truck as a Gasser.
nobody wants/likes the old heavy trucks. and It would look cool as a gasser with the Ford engine up front with a couple of carbs on top of a tunnel ram, out of the hood.

But a good way to go fast is big engine in a small truck...429 ranger.

The 429 ranger would be pretty awesome!
But the sbc would be half the price of a ford.

Yea i know, 429 ranger would be FUN! stroked to 514 or 521 would be OMG!
But can It, or myself survive a 1,100+ mile drive/race in it?
it would be in street race bigblock NA class. this year the slowest car in this class ran a 14.5et 1/4 mile the fastest was 9.01et @150 mph.

let me use this years layout.
http://blogs.hotrod.com/events/2014-drag-week/

But drag week is race at one track on day one. (Tulsa Ok.) get a time slip.
drive your vehicle ..(no trailers)...you HAVE TO DRIVE IT to the next track for day 2 race at (Topeka Ks.) race get a time slip.
drive to next track on day 3 ( Noble Ok.)
drive and race day 4 at (Great bend Ks.)
drive and race day 5 finals at ( Tulsa Ok.)

so your race/ drag car/truck has to survive 1,100 + miles of street driving and still have to run good down the strip.

Sounds like fun right? LOL

:thefinger: :D

My vote is for the C10/429 combo.

Honestly though, super cheap can be done, IF, IF, you know what your doing. As much as I hated getting told "if I had to ask I shouldn't be doing it", it falls along those lines. If you have to ask such a generic 3 letter "how" question, you ain't gonna do it for cheap. It can still be done, and they can still absolutely do it themselves, but it will. not. be. cheap.

LOL! Cute kitty cat.

Yea, what I want to build don't fall in the suuuuper cheap catagory.

the old saying goes when working on a project.
cheap, good, fast. pick 2.
If ya want it cheap it wont be good.
If ya want it good, it wont be fast.
If ya want it fast, it wont be cheap

One vote for the c10-429 chevy with ford heartbeat...gotta love it!
one vote for the ranger 429 so far.

Dragweek is on my bucket list, so IT WILL GET BUILT! Wife is all for it to.

Doh, I missed the Ranger (which would also be crazy fun, I guess consider it a half vote), but the nose curling blasphemy of mixed blood...

I agree! I am getting sick of everybody sticking a chevy LS platform in every make and model lately. My nose is curling everytime I see a LS powered mustang.
Granted it is a great motor, and can make alot of power. Stock motor can handle alot of turbo boost also.

the ranger I have is a 84 standard cab long bed 4x4 2.8 v6 5 speed truck.
But the 429 swap would get rid of the 4x4 part.
I can't afford to build it 4x4 429 drag truck...But it would be sweet, and help in the traction dept.

another vote for the 429 Ranger. Altho the 455 Cutlas 442 has me interested as well.

Hey couldn't you use cardboard then rosin it to make it hard?

wouldn't see why not... don't know how duraable it would be especially if the resin cracked and water got in. But it would be a cheap and easy fix if it did happen :)
