i wana put a bigger motor in my 98 ford ranger its 4x4 with a 3.0 want a bigger motor any one know what would work.... i would like to put a 4.0 in it .:icon_hornsup:

well, as for as work? Hell you could put an general electric gas turbine engine in your truck if you really wanted too, any engine will work lol

As far as amount of time and money? then yes the 4.0 v6 is the best way to go and easiest as far as the swap goes. Just get ready for some wiring work, and your going to need to swap the transmission aswell. Im 99% postive the bell housings are different from the 3.0 and 4.0.

the 4.0 would be cheapest, and the least amount of work for the giving power increase. But depending on what you use your truck for you may want to drop the extra time and money into a 2.3 motor, rebuild that and put a turbo on it. That will easily make more HP then a 4.0 and depending how crazy you go more torque aswell. Just go on youtube and look at some vids of turbo rangers, im sure those will help you decide. I know if i had my bronco II again, i would definatly have swapped a 2.3 turbo in it, given the amazing results ive seen on youtube haha!

Whatever engine you switch to, you're going to have to change out the trans (or atleast the bell housing), the wiring harness, and the ECU. In my opinion, If you're going to swap, either do v8, or 4cyl turbo as stated already. It's a ton of work no matter what engine you use, so you might as well get some decent power out of the engine when you're finished. You could also just boost your current engine for about the same price, and less down time.

i was going to suggest boosting the 3.0 he has already too, and i have seen that done. What scares me is how little performance market there is for the 3.0 v6, so if he does decide to turbo it, everything done to the motor to make it a turbo is going to be fabbed himself. Manifold/header setup, tuning, etc. But hey, being creative is half the fun in doing this anyway. But just be wary of how much boost you run on the 3.0 unless you do internal engine work...if thats even feasable for a 3.0

due to the fact that the bellhousings are not interchangeable and the bolt pattern is only shared with a front wheel drive 3.8 (ford freestar, not mustang/f150 they use the 5.0 bolt pattern) you dont have much to work with. i can suggest one other option besides 3.0 turbo, 3.3 stroker (moranav6racing.com) or turbo 3.3 is to go find you a ford taurus sho with the yamaha/ford 24 valve 3.0. the entire head assembly and internals are different and produce over 200 hp, your 3.0 pushes 140 at the crank maybe. as far as the swap is concerned its straightforward, engine drops right in, the intake and exhaust manifolds are backwards but you can turn them around, and youll need the engine computer/wiring harness to run the motor. all other options require the same thing plus a transmission (4.0/2.3 turboswap) or engine mount/firewall mods (302v8 etc.) take your pick buddy and happy wrenching.

Supercharge the 3.0!!!
