i unplug #3 plug wire and engine dies

1993 ranger xl 2 door 2.3 engine ,std trans 5 speed
i just installed plugs and wires because of bad wires {sparking everywhere}
and i was in the engine compartment because of skip and rough idle and backfire
so i pulled every wire off of coil packs 1 at a time and engine would run
except for number 3 wire on intake side
this vehicle has 8 plugs and wires and 2 coil packs
1 coil pack for combustion and the 1 coil pack for exhaust
any help is thanked in advanced
 
ok tested coil packs and got 12k ohms between 1,4 and 2,3
but on the electrical plugin i got no ohms i tested the center spade with the outer 2 spades am i doing this the right way and should there be at least
some resistance
i was reading that there was at least a 5 ohm or lower reading possible
but it did not say 0 ohms
i checked my secondary coil pack the same way and it read exactly like the primary
 
I'd hook it all back up and check with a timing light to see if each bank is firing. If not...I'd take a look at the ignition control module. It may be bad. You should be getting CEL on though if this is the case for mutiple misfire.
 
engine is still running rough idle {engine skips,backfires,bucks} no engine codes , but at higher rpms it runs smooth


i moved front coil pack to rear coil pack and engine did not die afterwards i suspect bad grounding of coil packs



i have allready replaced the icm because of extreme corrosion

did compression test 150 to 157 psi all 4 cylinders {cold and hot engine}

replaced thermostat

everytime i hook up the engine to engine diagnostic scanner the temp sending unit works fine ??

going for temp sending unit because temp is allways low {just above cold} on needle gauge
replaced temp sending unit about 8 years ago, no joy

checked wires from temp sending unit to ecm and they ohmed a completed circuit

latest - i smell gas on pcv valve any thoughts
i see where the pcv plugs into the block and it looks like a crankcase vent
the vent looks glogged up thee pcv hose can be blown through but the crankcase vent looks clogged
 
You are probably seeing build up on the baffle.
Grommet should be a Motorcraft 42592 42. They rot.
Clean the PCV valve if you don't replace it.
It ain't causing your misfire, but is a vacuum leak if the pcv is loose.

There are two temp senders.
PCM's ECT sender has two wires, affects running. Yours sounds good, that would display on the scanner. The other is gage only, one wire. Ground it, turn the key to run long enough to see the gage peg.

Make sure you have a 193 thermostat, no lower.

if you swapped the coilpacks and the truck ran differently then you have a bad coilpack

for each coilpack the secondary resistance should be 13k-15k and the primary resistance should be less than 5
