i think my rings are bad..any help

hey i got a 1993 4x4 ranger with 3.0..i cranked it up one day and revd it up a lil and i noticed it smokin..so i got out and went to see wat the exhaust smelt like..(gas or oil) and i noticed on the car next to me that i splattered oil on it from my exhaust..and for the past week ive noticed a lost in power..can anyone help me out..

Cranking it up and reving it will almost always throw sooty condensation out of the tail pipe. The seeming loss of power is prolly you just being too sensative.. Quit looking and you will prolly be Ok.
As for rings being worn there will be a LOT of smoke at all times and you will burn a quart of oil between fuel fillups. So I'm doubting the ring issue.

well it has been burning oil..my oil guage bounces and wen i add more it stops..and wen i get down on it to like pass a car it smokes...and i checked all my spark plugs and my first 2 cylinders on the right side were drenched in oil..

You can perform a compression test first wet then dry that will tell you a lot.I think part of what Big Jim is trying to say you don't loose rings near as much any more.Better lubrication better metallurgy but the real gain was fuel injection because raw gas isn't washing the lube out of the cylinder.Another thing to check if you have a manual is let off the gas going down a hill see if it smokes when you reapply the gas.That indicates valve guides.
