This weekend I tried pulling the stuck ball hitch out of the receiver by hooking it to a tree. After a particularly hard tug the transfer case came out of 4 low, and ground going back in. It does this every so often now and pops out too. Is the transfer case fubar or should I be looking at the linkage? It's a BW1354 manual shift

I'd be looking at the linkage, maybe it just needs a bit of adjustment.

agreed, they are made to put more torque and stress through those cases than you put through it...

coincidence on timing, or the bounce of hitting the end of the rope or what ever, caused something to bounce out of place, keep in mind your truck is 17 years old!

Yeah my plan is to take off and reinstall the linkage to make sure it's correct, then drive around until it pops out of 4 low and record the distance, repeat until I'm sure it's not some broken teeth on a gear. Don't doubt the power of the 2.9!! Lol

i'm not doubting the power of the 2.9, i'm doubting your doubting of the t/c

Yeah well I forgot to mention it's on my 91 with 33s and locked. Don't know if that would really make a difference.
When I pull the linkage off, is there a way a can lock it in 4 low to rule out a linkage issue?

yea when you pull the linkage of there is a lever like thing with a pin on it. You should be able to hit it into 4 low. I had a transfer case that did that to me one time. It would always pop out when I used it. I checked the linkage and it was fine. so I dropped the t case and found out that the fork thing with the pin on it wore and oval hole in the side of the case itself. I just went down and got some washer from lowes and put them on the inside and outside of the case. Its still worked for 3 years until i got another t case

Lol now there's a home grown ranger. You weren't kidding with that name!

Nope lol, built it in my driveway. Nobody believes me till they see the pictures :headbang: Its hard to explain what all it is because its an 86-92. Had to get a new vin for it and everything. Might be getting rid of it soon though cause Im joining the air force. Right now im in the process of building a 84 crew cab long bed with a 90 cab and a 94 turbo idi. So far its got 9 inches of lift on 40s. sorry for the thread jack

how about you just send me that 1354m and i'll fix it

and throw it in my truck... lol

I figured it out after taking the 4 minutes to look it over. One of the bolts that hold the bracket to the trans is missing and it allowed the assembly rock forward enough that I couldnt move the shift far enough back for 4 low. Easy fix this time!
And no. The damn hitch is still stuck. Screw it I need a rear bumper, I'll add a receiver to that!

The damn hitch is still stuck.

pb blaster, someone to help, and a sledge hammer. it took me and dad over an hour to get the hitch outta his old truck, but we got it. time and effort, and its all yours.
