I should win a prize...

Heck if anything I should be getting the prize for changing my fluids within 1000 miles of what the owners manual says. I always hear geez you are always working on your cars but in all reality I'm just doing the normal scheduled work.

Matt

my 87 probably had the original coolant in it when I got it, at 56,000 miles :D
its now sitting with around 78,000 miles in the backyard.

For the most miles on the original green coolant in a Ranger. 12 years, 125,000 miles.

Here's what it looks like now:

That stuff has got to be battery acid by now lol. You can probably power a light bulb with your radiator!

Hmm. I couldn't imagine neglecting something like that for 12 years. Most of my trucks systems get attention every other month, even if just a look, they get seen and usually tested semi- regularly.

no prob. this kind of stuff pays my bills.

thats the worst green coolant i've ever seen. i thought it was dex-coolitis

Probably is. At work if I don't like the looks of someone's coolant but the hydrometer says its ok, I have been known to stick the probes of my voltmeter in the bottle looking for voltage so I have a selling point.

Then I can go out and tell the customer "Sir, your engine is turning itself into a battery and the cooling system is going to start eating itself from the inside out."

are you sure thats not a jar of peanut butter?

So, to bring this back, I am now at 138,000 miles. Had to replace the freeze plugs in the back of the block around 135,000. Now it needs a radiator, and I have the heads stripped off to replace the head gaskets.

Moral of the story: Change your coolant on time!

No, you should be kicked in the shin by a midget for not taking care of your vehicle.

I've seen what not keeping the coolant changed can do to the insides of an engine. How about the guy that spent $12,000 to replace his 6.0L because he couldn't spend $100 to change his coolant every 3 years. It ate away the edges of the water passages at the top of the block to the point where the head gaskets wouldn't seal anymore.

^^^What he said. There are so many idiots in our world and here we have another.....lol When your truck dies soon...too BAD.

Got the heads done up today. Milled flat, 5 angle valve job, two broken exhaust studs extracted, new freeze plugs, and new valve seals. Thankfully I know some people, and was able to get the work done at a discount. Still enough to make me want to change the darn coolant more often from now on. Hopefully this fixes everything back up for awhile though.

Just get a 2.3 and run it really hot...crack the head and when you swap it out put in new coolant...works for me!

I don't think I've gotten more than two years out of any 2.3 combination on my truck since I've owned it...and this is variation #5 I think...so five times I've swapped out a head or whole engine...

Maybe I should think about that upgrade to a bigger engine...hmmmmm...

I've seen worse. Seen a Dodge Dakota where the coolant was so puddy like, it was like brick motar. Did the best I could to flush its coolant system, but no how to get all of it out.
