i need some phone gurus! any opinion welcomed.

so i got a motorola devour for free (android OS), im wanting to switch it to page plus wireless. if you dont know what page plus is heres a link: Prepaid Phone Plan Benefits

basically its a prepaid service where you can use any verison phone you have with a clear ESN (not blacklisted)

so heres where im at, i like what page plus offers but im not too technologically savvy. in order for this phone not to eat up data like crazy i would have to get certain apps and set the phone up to not use data except when WiFi is in range. im not sure about how to go about this. i went on some nerdy forums and learned alot but am having trouble putting all the info together on how to go about doing this.

i dont really need the data stuff, i just want to be able to call and text. but i still need to set it up so it doesnt eat the data up in just a few days.

the only reason im going through all this trouble is because i ran my straight talk phone over yesterday . so now i need a new phone. this one fell in my lap (literally lol) and page plus offers a better plan for the same amount of money.

so anybody who is technically savvy, could you steer me in the right direction with setting up my phone?

I'm not certain on this, but my understanding is that Verizon android phones have an option to disable 3G, that will at least slow down data transfers. As far as keeping data usage down most stuff is common sense, don't use pandora, e-mail, browser, etc (all the stuff that makes having a smartphone nice).

And not trying to thread-jack but I like having unlimited data...Honestly, 7 months ago I never saw a need for a smartphone. Then I got one in June and can't imagine going back to a simple phone (My Samsung Moment replaced my Moto Razr). If you would like to be able to use data Virgin Mobile (uses Sprint's towers) has a $60 unlimited everything plan (prepaid). Or you could just get spint's "every thing data" plan for $70/month, which includes unlimited calling to any cell phone (how many people do you know who don't have a cell phone?), nights and weekends start at 7pm, unlimited text, data. I have the everything data family plan and between my wife and I we use maybe 200 min a month, and we don't care if we call on peak or off peak. We use around 3GB of data though (luckily it's still unlimited).
