I need some more power!

well actully it says u can use a 1979 mustang2 with a 2.8 distributor in a 2.6 2.8 2.9 and even a 4.0 if u wanna go through the work

And "go through the work" only means changing the gear?

I don't want to be a pest, this info could help others trying to carburate a 2.9 or 4.0 in an old vehicle.

no the 4.0 doesn't have a distributor from the factory and i have never taken the time to look and see if there is a spot machined into the block for it to sit. but if it dose in theory yes it could work

I confess I haven't looked at the back of many OHV's either, but I have seen at least one thread here that shows the stubshaft that drives the oil pump. Something has to be driving them on OHV's

And if you look at LMC's catalog, for instance, the oil pump listed for the 2.9 and 4.0 are the same item (not a guarantee, but a good sign of course).

A quick look at rockauto's website for a cam synchronizer for a 97 ranger 4.0;

I saw a webpage where someone put a supercharger on a 4.0 by fabbing a piece of 2X3 steel tubing to fit on top of an EFI lower. One could redneck a pair of small 2bbl carbs onto this without fuel distribution being too bad.

It's starting to look like one could put a 4.0 with carb(s) and a duraspark ignition into an older pinto/mustangII/german capri/TVR/etc pretty easily.....and a 4.0 is getting into V8 displacement territory.

And, just for the knights that say "ney", with a wideband O2 setup, one could get the mixture good enough to make the little vehicle pull 20MPG, assuming the driver can stay out of the gas once they realize their little monster will really scoot.

hmmmm interesting i just looked at that cam synchro nd it looks pritty close to the 2.8 dizzy end ide live to see the two side by side

Um, which is it?

What does the book say you have to do to put a 2.8 duraspark in a 4.0?

And getting 20 different shafts from all kinds of engines to find one, even if that can be cut to length is no big deal IMO.
