ok i dont no if it goes here but in my high school shop class i need a welding project i would like to do something for my truck but the teacher already said i couldnt do a roll bar. im thinking of maybe a front bumper or possable a back bumper, i also thought about a dirt bike stand or something but iduno give me some ideas. if someone buys my roll pan off my 1988 ranger i will be building a back bumper probably so by my roll pan! :icon_welder:

bumpers, winch mounts, light bars (not the same as a roll bar) grille guard, tail gate, spare tire carrier, jerry can mounts, high lift mounts, skid plates, axle gussets, lift brackets, extended radius arms...if you want i will be more than happy to take your 'project' when you are finished :)

I'm currently welding up a park bench in my garage, using 1x1x1/16 square tubing and 1x3 oaks boards.

Make something useful around the house (coffee table or something) or a tool box.

I'd vote on front bumper. Do you have access to a bender? Front bumper could be anything from all plate, tube, square, etc. It would certainly be something that would get noticed.

i might go with a front bumper if i do it will just be a dual tubbed bumper with a loop on top like on jeeps or like smittybuilt made for rangers, or i could copy my lift brackets and try sell them and make some cash haha

im doin a rear rock crawler bumper outta 1 3/4" .120 wall dom round tubing. very sturdy. ill try and get some pics. ill tell ya, if u dont have a tube bender for something like this.... good luck! just curious, what kind of welder are you gonna use? im using a TIG.

I would say a rear bumper, build a 2" reciever into it in case you want to pull your dirtbike on a trailer, some lights for loading in the dark, maybe a mount for a ramp (hell build a ramp too while you're at it)

i have to use a arc welder since im only in grade 10 we dont get to use mig or tig welders. we do have a bender though, i think a rear bumper would be easier to make but iv got my roll pan on there so idont no if i should or not

I never understood why they do it this way.

IMO, MIG welding should be taught first. It's easier than stick (ARC) welding.

When I learned how to weld, here's the order that took place.

1. Oxy-acetylene welding......which I will never use, unless I'm going to cut something.

2. ARC.......my teacher started us with 7018. 6011 or 6013 is easier.

3. MIG with flux-cored wire.....easy.

4. MIG with 75/25% gas......easier, and should've been before flux core.

5. TIG welding stainless.

6. TIG welding aluminum.....IMO easier than stainless.

I'm no longer in grade 10 but I do own a stick welder. depends on your time line? I plain on welding a spare tire carrier for truck bed. If you do one make sure you can lock it so on one takes your spare! Its great u want to fabricate your own truck stuff. Take pride in it and do a good job

A couple dudes in my shop class build quad/dirt bike ramps from angle iron. Sounds easy, it is easy, but hey, if you only have 2?, 4? classes, to do it in then hey.
The ones they made they over built them and we have used them for truck ramps up onto trailers and out of miserable snowy ditches, they are heavy, but strong!
