Can anyone help me? I have an 86 f150 with the twin I beam IFS front axle, and when i back up the passenger tire cocks to the right and the front end lifts up. also the passenger axle shaft seems to be too short or something. but it wont stay in the slip joint. I dont know what to do?

It sounds like something is either extremely worn or broken on the front end. If you jack it up you should be able to find something loose there. Don't know about the shaft but it sounds like it might be broken at the slip joint.

Check your radius arm bushings, they sound like they are worn, pass side is known to wear faster due to the cat burning the bushings up

Bad wheel alignment can cause the 'jacking' you are describing aswell.

Sasquatch has it right, when the alignment is off (not just a little!) it will jack the front up.
Was the truck recently lifted? or was the axle worked on? almost sounds like someone has the wrong shaft in if it comes out of the slip joint. I've never seen them come out if everything was bolted in correctly.

Check the pivot for the pass axle though, last summer I saw a ranger at the gas station that I could see the pass side axle hanging down. I hung around to point it out to the guy, and when I did he said it had been handling funny for a couple weeks....

That's the bad thing about the internet, you find these interesting puzzles you'd like to dig into, but they're 2000 miles away.

Ken.
