Hey guys I am putting a 1996 efi explorer engine in a 1996 2wd ranger splash and was wondering if the big 42 pin connector that goes from the engine harness to the ranger is just plug and play type deal or does it need to be modified.I also do not know what to do with the connector to the transmission because i am using a c-4.do i just leave it unplugged and will the computer work out of the explorer with that connector unplugged.any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated. This is my first post so i hope i am doing it correctly.

Yes the 42 pin connector is plug and play! The only wiring mods I made were repinning the cluster for the tach to work and so my check engine light would work....But I also am running an Explorer cluster. I have no clue about the Transmission question...hopefully someone else can chime in.

Thanks

Thanks i didnt think i would ever find out.Do you remember what pins you changed for the cluster?

Um...I got it somewhere...I will check my Evtm manuals and get back to you in a few days. Its really simple though. Check out my build thread, it may contain some helpful info for you.

Thanks for all the help I hate bothering you with all the questions but i dont know anyone else that has done any of this.I read in your build up that you used mustang motor mounts what kind of mod did you do to the cross member and was your ranger a 4 cyl.By the way the ranger looks killer. Also do you know if the 1996 explorer had a distributor or coil packs.again thanks for all the info and sorry for being a pest.

No bother at all...I used 95 GT convertible mounts and I left my cross member in its original place and fabbed a plate for the trans that I bolted to my Cross member. It was originally a 4cyl. I am unsure about the 96 Explorer..I used a 97 and it has Coil packs.

Cool thanks for for the info it really helps.I did find out that it was coil pack on all the explorers with the 5.0 some of the trucks had distributors but not the explorers.:icon_thumby:
P.S. Could you send me pics of the unit that goes where the distributor goes i am not sure of how all that hooks up with the coil packs and all.i do not see the wiring in my harness for it.
Thanks if that is possible to do.

The Synchronizer replaces the distributor assembly and it drives the windowed vane that passes by the Camshaft Position Sensor mounted on top. The CMP sensor basically tells the PCM which revolution the engine is on because there are two revolutions of the crank but one rev of the cam per 4 cycle sequence. The PCM needs this to synch up the sequential fuel injection events to the valve events of the individual cylinders.

Earlier Ex 5.0 (96~98) used a 3-wire Hall Effect sensor; later 5.0 (99~01) used a 2-wire Variable Reluctance Sensor. The two types of sensor are not interchangeable and require different vane widths and different synchronization tools. The wide vane must be used with the HE and the narrow vane must be used with the VRS. Your 96 PCM is set up for the Hall Effect, so you must use the HE and matching wide vane Synchronizer assembly.

This is a picture of a Chinese copy of the Ford Synchronizer and CMP. At about a third of the price of the OE part, these are tempting but they have a bad rep. If it fails completely, the oil pump stops....

Thanks for the info. That helps me understand it a whole lot better.I was not sure how that thing was going to work.I am an old school mechanic lol.:icon_thumby:

Wire identification

Can anyone help me with identfing some wires on the end of my wiring harness for the explorer some one cut the harness off and i have another harness off of a little bit later model but on my harness i have some extra wires a heavy gauge red wire with a black wire w/white stripe which i do not know what it is.
then i havethe single green and white stripe wire which is the oil pressure i believe.
then i have a black wire with a pink stripe and a gray wire with a yellow stripe that also has a bare wire running beside it that i do not know where it goes looking at my other harness it looks like the crank sensor.
then i have a blue wire with a pink stripe by its self and a bare wire running beside it that i have no idea where it goes.
then i have a geen w/red stripe and a gray w/red stripe that goes to the tempature sender on the heater hose pipe.
then i have a red w/white stripe that goes to the tempature sender in intake.
i also have my coil pack connectors and a shunt on the end of it.i think i might have to find another harness.
