As I was driving through town today at 11:00 at night, I saw more than once cats roaming in the middle of the streets. Why would people let their cat out in town? It's nothing but concrete and grass. Maybe a squirell or 2, but that's about it.

If it was in the country, then that I understand. Critters, bushes, tall grass, no cars. The cat's dream(except when a larger animal eats it).

Now, I'm sure most of you hate cats and could care less about this. But as an indoor cat owner, I would never let her out to explore. When she stays inside, she is, for the most part, going to stay healthy and alive for a very long time. There are no benefits to roaming in town.

Dog owners here at least obey the leash law and keep them one one, or have a backyard fence.

But cat owners here expect Missy to avoid all the traffic, stray dogs, and the occult teens(yes, there are a few of those up here too).

I just couldn't bear the though of something happening to what is, essentially, my kid. I mean, Have you ever seen a cat this cute!? This is how we snooze away an afternoon........................

As a fellow cat fan and indoor cat owner I can see what your saying. But a few of my friends have outdoor cats and even though they live in the city they have to let out their cats. If a cat wants to go out and you don't let it, they start trying to escape, and eventually they do. So its just easier to let them out and have their fun then to keep fighting them.

yeah...... my cat is declawed so no going out for him...... he must have been neutered later in life because there is a female in heat nearby and he keeps trying to get out

Now that's the way to spend an afternoon....

That is true. Let'em out once, and you'll regret it.

I wouldnt worry to much about a cat, they are like the only animal the can survive with out human intervention almost anywhere in the world. I'm from the country and we hate the fact that people think that a cat will be better off there and drop them off on a farm. You have rats, mice, chip monks, dumpsters, and birds in the city they can survive their. I have had out door and in door cats, some of the out door cats were decalwed because they were droped off that way and they still faired ok but usually get it from a car or a fox, and angry farmers cause they try to get chickens.

I lived in a trailer park and let my cats go out whenever they wanted through the dryer vent hole in the floor(I had no dryer). I kept getting them fixed and all they're shots and they kept disapearing and a few got run over. I later found out the parks owners son and his buddy was carrying a .22 and killing any cat they could :( It seems what makes the most difference is the cat itself, some do fine being indoor/outdoor cats and some don't. Some cats are fine staying inside and are even afraid of the outdoors. If I lived near a busy road it would be hard for me to have a cat because I have had to bury so many animals I loved. Right now I live in the woods down a long lane in the country and it's a good place to have an indoor/outdoor cat or dog. My Mom has never had her cat neutered and most times he is fine but last Feb. he was gone 6 days and came back skinny as a rail. Thats a cute cat you got by the way :)

I had a dog once, lost it in a mild seperation. Then I had a kitten.... followed me everywhere, even watched me play plastation in college on my shoulder, then I moved and had to leave it at home, got eaten by natures most feared beast "the serpentine belt"
Ever since then I give up on animals, i don't even like to date a girl with pets, at least not inside, I didn't realize how bad an animal could stink up a nice home till I've been petless for over a year. I'll stick with cows....

And as to the cats you see, most are probably ferrell.... when I was in Illinois, everybody had ferrell cat traps.... had to put a lot down that were deemed untame-able, and I'm not kidding, I'd rather stick my hand in raccoons nest than pull one of those cats out of the cages I saw.

Here's my cats:Angel, Snowy, and Oreo. They all go outside but Oreo spends the most time outside, only coming in to eat, if she doesn't catch a bird in the yard. When we walk our dog, Oreo likes to follow behind and we actually had neighbors throw rocks at her while she was walking behind us one time! Needless to say, they got an ear full.

When we got our first cat 13 years ago we let her outside and kept her in the barn for a little while. We got another cat and did the same thing, the 2nd cat didn't come home one day, then a week or two later our first cat dragged herself home with a pellet in her leg. We keep her inside now, and do let her outside (tied up so she won't run away). And our other cat that we got when the 2nd one didn't come home has no interest in going outside.

Cruel people out there.

I live in the city and my cat goes out all the time. The only time she really comes in is at night and whenever she gets hungry from hunting all day with out any reward. Other than that its great cause we dont have to deal with any critters in the yard (or song birds, bummer) haha. Appleton isnt really a concrete jungle either tho.

Keeping a cat inside implies that you believe you own the cat.

My last cat was a tom cat that showed up wanting someplace dry
to sleep or something to eat or just a warm lap and a finger to scratch the places he couldn't reach.

He was a crankly demanding beast that'd disappear sometimes for
several weeks... but he always came back... he came back simply
because he wanted to...

He was "my cat" because he wanted to be.

He simply showed up one afternoon and adopted me...
