Hello,

I have a 2.3L manual transmisison.
It is hard to shift to first, but that is the only one. Once I get it to second, third, fourth everything is alright. When I shift to first it DOES NOT make a grinding noise, but you can just feel it is hard to get in there. Once in a while I can shift into first with no problems, but rarely does it happen.
Then I think 5th I have a feeling it wants to pop out, but then I again it could just be like that.
Then reverse... sometimes I feel like it is in gear then I accelerated and it makes a scratching noise. I stop put it back to reverse and it makes the hard grinding noise when I put it in reverse.

So any suggestions to what the problem might be. If it where the clutch would I have not have problems with the rest of the gears as well?
So any ideas would be appreciated:icon_thumby:

Thanks

slave cylinder might be on its way out. peddle soft at all?

Sorry for the extra posts, but what happens if my slave cylinder goes out? Will it not shift to first?

if you slave goes out completely your clutch will not work at all. It will be impossible to get it into any gears with the car stopped and the engine running. It is pretty easy to change on the 4 cylinder, but you do have to drop the transmission. At least you won't have to remove the exhaust in order to get it out with the 4 cylinder.

OOHH, Ok thanks, so I better get to that pretty quick. Hopefully it last me a couple of more weeks
I was looking it up and I nocticed that autozone was cheaper than rockauto.com.

i doubt it's the slave cylinder. you could try bleeding the system and see if that helps. sounds more like the transmission is just getting wore out. I wouldn't spend all that time changing the slave just to have it shift the same. try bleeding the clutch and changing the tranny fluid.

If you have to bleed the system, the air got in there somehow as it is sealed similar to brakes. You can check the master cylinder fluid reservoir to see if it is low on fluid. If it then something is leaking. My Ranger's master cylinder leaked around the rod and I lost fluid from there. Is it hard to get into 1st if you are coming up to a stop with the truck still rolling?

Double check your clutch fluid. It's the little round resevoir against the firewall , drivers side. Level should be up to the "step".

Well, I have heard that putting it in first before stopping helps. So I do that at stop signs and some stop lights, and yes it is a "little" easier to shift, but you can still feel it is rough. Know what I mean?

OK I will check my fluid.
I will also do the research on bleeding the clutch.

Any other thoughts of what it might be?

You can try putting it in 2nd first then, without releasing the clutch, put it in 1st or REV. This should help line up the gears and make it easier to put it in gear.

All right, thanks for the tip. (I have not heard that one.)
I will do that next time I drive it.

I had the same problem with mine. Slave puked 8 months later. New slave, perfect shifting. Change it now, you won't regret it.

i still think its the slave. mine did that just before the slave went out completely
