I have a high revving Ranger, what could it be?

This is my first newer Ranger, I am usually into the first and second Gens. SO when my 2000 Ranger had issues I am not knowledgeable in their quirks. This truck has a 3.0 with a five speed. When in neutral and idling the RPMs rev up past 2000. What could cause this and what am I looking at to repair it?

more then likely a faulty idle control valve. its the thing that's on top of the throttle body

or u have a vacuum leak. I missed getting a vacuum line on when i changed out a set of injectors and it idled 1800 - 2000 rpm.

All of a sudden the truck started running fine again. I never did anything. ??????????

I have this problem on my 94. It's an intermittent problem. Does yours drop back down to a normal idle once you come to a complete stop?

Not saying this is your problem, but the previous owner of my 2000 Mazda B-3000 replaced the cam position sensor for the same symptoms.

clean your idle air control valve, i don't know the style of yours, but basically, you want to get as much throttle body cleaner into as much of the piece as possible, without soaking the electric motor. if possible (worked for my mustang) put it in a shallow cup, and fill the cup with the TB cleaner as high as you can without getting the electronics submerged, let it soak for a few hours if need be, a soft wire brush helps, tooth brush, q-tips, scraper... anything you can use to get carbon and junk off of it... usually they become sticky or the motor can wear out...

if it's intermittent like it seems to be, this is my bet

actually, better yet, simple way to test if it's that or not... pull the idle air control valve off, i am fairly sure there will be 2 holes, each of the 2 holes will go into a chamber thing on the valve, it will have a plunger, which lets air flow through it... take a pop can, cut it out in the same shape as the mating surfaces, drill holes for the bolts, put it all back together, with the pop can between the throttle body and the IAC, if this doesn't eliminate the problem of a higher than normal RPM, then i can almost gaurantee you have a vac leak...

the truck should be barely running, if it will even idle at all... if it won't start, give it just a touch of gas to get it going, then keep it going and see if you can make it idle without the gas pedal
