Ranger on p/u but I do not know about top end in the toyota they had a safety sw that shut it down at 137.But you would think these 6 cylinder would kill that toyota. It this just mind or does everyone have that problem??? I think a tractor could beat my truck off the line

Are you saying your toyota would beat your 3.0 Ranger ? A 3.0 needs a 5spd. The power band is way up high. Power shifting best done at 4,000 rpm. What engine is in the toyota?

Didn't you know it was a V8 Tacoma? LOL Lots of similar sized engines have more low end torque, like R44 said the 3.0 is a revver. It likes shifts around 3500 or so and gets its best economy cruising between 2000 and 2500 rpm.

The tundra is a 4.7L dohc 32v v-8. The Tacoma as far as I know uses a 3.4 dohc 24v v-6. One of my old buddies had a standard cab/bed toyota tacoma 5-speed 3.4 liter. Maybe called an S-runner? I forgot the exact name but it was much faster and higher revving than any ranger I have come across. Road and track says 15.20 stock and i believe it was a 2004?

I wish my ranger had a better axle (3.07) but it is still plenty quick. I can manage 15.8 with it stock, just enough to hammer all those 4.3 chevys. 4.3's have good power and torque but they are not nearly as smooth and balanced as my 4.0. They even have balance shafts too!!

It was however a single cable where my Ranger is an ext cab,Do not know if that makes a diffrents but I know it was a 4cly vs. this 3.0 6 cly.I like this ranger on the highway more but around town the toyota was much quicker without even driving hard.Oh yeah The s-runner one of you talked about had a 6cly,If you can get your hands on one of those You have a rare truck and a pretty quick truck !!!Oh yeah the s-runner was an ext cab too and They only made tose 2001-2004.Get one if you want a Bad lil truck !

When you say 15.8 are you referring to quater mile time?

It's the Tacoma X-runner and yes, with the 5 spd it's a bad little truck.

Tacoma's now run a 4.0L V-6.

What YEAR is your Toyo, and what size 4-banger? I remember back in the 80s when the Toyotas (and Ford Couriers) were truly MINI pickups, not like today's MID-sizers, and they really MOVED with the 4-banger! That Toyota mill was always up-tuned for performance; it was their angle for breaking into the US pickup market.

There was a dealer-installed Toyota-factory SUPERCHARGER option that turned that tiny 4-cylinder (2.0L??) into an unleashed ANIMAL! A buddy in Colorado had one, 4x4, 5-spd, big tires, and it just ate up all terrain... and all other small pickups. (It was Marty McFly's dream truck in the original 'Back To The Future' flick.)

If you've ever driven in the UK, Europe, or anywhere else where the plebes are taxed on DISPLACEMENT, then you know just how much HP can be had with only 2 liters. (Doesn't the Honda S2000, normally-aspirated, get 240HP out of 2.0L??? That's a whopping 2 HP/cubic inch!!)

Anyway, our beloved/hated Ranger 3.0L V-6 was, for better or worse, designed from the oil pan up for ECONOMY, not vroom-vroom. I've got a flush-fit steel decklid, and even with 500lbs. of cargo, and all that 1930s-era 4x4 machinery underneath, I can get 25-26mpg hwy @ 72MPH... F150 drivers envy me... F350 drivers HATE me... LOL.

There are anomalous trucks out there......I've driven a mitsu mini pickup that was tiny but really moved out.

fyi for anyone still reading this thread: the Toyota 2.7L 4cyl. (what's currently offered) is rated at 159hp.
our beloved 3.0, 148... :(

Never ran against a toyota but the 4cyl colorados aren't too fast especially up hill. It's the only way to win in a truck race econo cars up hill to win!

My "07" (built after they started the 08 line so I got all the 08 goodies) B3000 2wd crawls forward in mud filled landscaping yards loaded with 1000+lbs of dirt by merely letting the clutch out in 1st. It also seems to have little or no effect on acceleration (I'm not trying to go flat out with that much weight in it though) so maybe the new ones 07-08 are stronger/faster?
