i know i couldve put this in the conversion forum but more eyes here
I currently have a stock, nothing fancy, 96 ranger 2.3l 5 speed extended cab. 130,xxx. same engine and trans.
I want to do a conversion from the wee little 4 banger to the 4.0 v6 for more power (and in my case the same fuel economy for some reason).
i want to keep it a manual transmission as well.

what engine year should i look for? 02 03 04 etc and from what donor or supplier; a fellow ranger, exploder, or supplier? does the M50D-R1 need any upgrades (besides a rebuild) to fit onto the 4.0 or an entire deifferent transmission need to be scavenged for as well. what are the problems and roadblocks. parts? computer, wiring harness, fuel, etc :icon_welder:

i would like to do this on a weekend but time is of the essence since this is my daily driver work wise. i can do maintnence and stuff from the oil change to a new clutch.

any advice is helpful. thankyou :3gears:

and for engine options finding a salvage title? legal issues and the such cuz california is close to impossible to do anything in

The conversion forum is there for a reason. Because you will get more eye's from people who have done the swap or from others who have info on the swap. Instead of whoever.

Otherwise this forum gets cluttered up from people asking the same questions over and over again.

Please use the proper forums, that's why they are there. Just as every tool has it's place in the garage, they're not dumped into a pile in the middle of the floor, even if more eyes can see them it doesn't make things easier to find.

To answer the question about the tranny, no it will not bolt up. You need a M5OD-R1HD that came with the 4.0L.

Search here on the site about upgrading to a 4.0....tranny swap needed and your stock axles won't really handle a 4.0 if you are gonna realy wheel it...need to upgrade a must....

and the pushrod OHV 4.0 will be easier to install than the SOHC 4.0, probly more reliable.. a donor vehicle can be had for 500$ typicaly, such as a rolled over explorer. and yea, you will have to get a trans from a 4.0.

Price wise, here's what I paid for mine. I bought a 92-93 4.0 ohv for $250 on craigslist with the full wiring harness from an explorer. I paid $345 for a 4.0 manual transmission (I didn't have a core) from a junkyard that pulls the parts for you. And I've spent a few hundred on goodies like a new clutch, slave cylinder, wiring, tune up parts, ecu, motor mounts, and yadda yadda. I'm 1,000 invested and now have everything I need to get the motor installed. I'm dumping mine in this weekend hopefully. I've heard the OHV motor is more reliable than the SOHC, and for my 94 ranger, its an easier swap because they're both set up for EEC-IV. I will say, its more expensive and a lot more of a challenge than I thought it would be going into it.
