Here's the deal, I have asked around on this forum, and I think I will put a dana 30 (jeep one) and yes I know how vulnarable they are, but I plan on doing the swap when I can afford it, what I plan on doing is EITHER swapping a 4wd transmission into it, OR doing a divorced tcase on the back of my transmission. Here is the current specs on my truck, 1990 2wd reg. cab, long bed, 2.3 4cyl, M5OD(I think), I just want to look at my options.

I would swap to a 4WD transmission and use the matching t-case. You're bound to have far fewer problems with it this way.

behind a 2.3 the D30 will hold fine under most conditions, I know someone that was BOMBING thier XJ with the 4.0 with 31's in the sand dunes, I'm talking rev limiter up the bowls and such, was fine...

and I agree with junkie on the stock manual transfer case, best option, and yes, you do have the M5ODR1 tranny, stock on all manual 4 cylinders starting in '87 or '88

Thanks, when I can I will get a dana 30 and swap it, along with a tcase/tranny. There is a first gen ranger down the road from me that is sitting on a trailer(has for years) its a 4x4, and looks like its in decent condtion, just dont know the specs on it, if I get the chance I will buy it, swap over the tranny to my 2wd, and use the first gen to swap over a chevy 350. Oh by the way, when convert from 2wd to SAS, do you have to modify the crossmember on the 2wd for the front driveshaft?

what do you think my mpg would be with a 5sp, 2.3, with the dana 30? I don't plan on driving the truck hard.

Depends on what gears you run in the axles, and what size tires (and total lift height).
22-24 MPG might be a good guesstimate for hwy if everything's optimized well, and you run radial tires.

Crossmember shouldn't interfere with the driveshaft, but might need trimmed for the differential itself though (depends on the axle's diff offset and amount of lift).

You don't need to think you have an M5OD-R1 trans.

1988-up on an engine other than a 2.9 it's the only manual transmission Ford used.
