Just agravated that it took me 4 hours to log on to the internet today. I think its great that the internet sucks on military bases over here. You can buy your own satalite dish and network from the locals, and its more reliable than what we get. I'm sure the money that could be spent to upgrade the internet is being used to buy swampers for k5 blazers and some high speed bfg baha tires that i have never seen before, even though those trucks will never leave the wire or pavement for that matter.

i would put one on them smiley faces banging his head but i would have to wait 2-3 hours for it to load.

Probably too much security...I sent an e-mail to a guy stationed in Germany once from my corporate account and he never did get it...he ended up calling about ten times because we simply couldn't correspond via e-mail...I'd get his messages, but nothing I sent got through.

Don't they have internet cafes that you can visit off-site? Why not suggest that they put up one on base (unless you're in the middle of the desert somewhere)...

We have the internet cafes here, they have wireless. The only security for them is the user. On the military computers there are security settings, but i'm on my lap top. I was recently at another base and they had amazing internet, and if you couldnt get on wireless you couls use a LAN line. But not here.

Seems strange that your connection is slow for wifi...it should be 10 Mbs or higher...the logging on is even stranger, but without knowing what errors you were getting or if it was just too slow to connect makes it difficult to determine causes...

I recently was tinkering with my Anti-Virus software and somehow boosted the scan level to aggessive...it would take forever to load something...thought it was my server...then I checked the Task Manager and found the program that was hogging the resources...my AV software was using 99% of the CPU time...when I tried to turn the setting down it would not release the CPU times...so I had to disable it (I have a backup Firewall) and now it zips along fast again...

If you're running 2000 or XP open up the task manager and watch for something using too much of the CPU time...then go from there if you find something...if you need help with that just let us know what program it is...

If your computer works fine on a land line (direct connection to a phone jack) then there is probably nothing wrong with your computer or software settings...or it may be your firewall is too aggressive or you've turned on something that is dragging down your connection...

Not all security is at the endpoints.

You MUST have a hierarchical network on base, whether it is using wireless or hardwired. If it's slow as heck, either there is a choke point somewhere, or there is a repeated authentication failure, or the system is attempting to encrypt the entire data stream. I'd suspect the last one. Government gets excessive about that sometimes, and the IT folks who make that decision don't seem to understand that it DOES make a difference because reality differs from the 1980s assumption that all interaction is very low data rate text.

Not all data should be encrypted, though clearly some of it should. One solution is multiple networks with different levels of security.

Security ALWAYS offsets usability and function. Trading off properly is much more difficult than many people realize. Yes, you can be too secure if it means you can't do anything.
