I hate the mouse on the computer I use to make decals with.

I'm still using a Compaq Presario 5150 with Windows 98 to run my decal cutter. That's all I use it for and it's still running (same big 8gig hard drive since 1998).

My mouse on the other hand is driving me nuts. I struggle trying to drag stuff around the screen. I've cleaned it, but it's shot. I need to buy a new one, but I think all the mouses you find now have USB plugs. I need to find the old style.

Some of them come with a little adapter that will convert it from usb to ps2.

You have several options:
  1. Use a USB to ps2 adapter (usually green plastic). If you cannot find one, I may have one for you.
  2. find an old ps2 mouse at a second hand store (Goodwill, etc.) in your area
  3. If the plug larger than a ps2 size, you can get an adapter from ps2 to the larger one (pm me, I might have one for you).
  4. Upgrade computer

there's no usb port no that computer? seems like there should be, and you can use it for a mouse instead of the ps2 port that the current mouse uses. if not, you can get an adapter like has been mentioned. they usually come with the mouse anyways.

dam Jim if i would have known that the day i brought the banner over to Hubbard i would have given you one of those adapters i had. in exchange for a hand shake.:icon_cheers:

goto a computer store, a small one, like PC Club or something, and buy one, usually they sit in a discount box for $3 to $10.

I got one I can send to ya, just need $5 for shipping =P, free of charge otherwise. I got a few of those.

One word of advise...

Any mouse that has a physical ball on the bottom should be shitcanned.

I've created a stir in my household by systematically smashing every
mechanical mouse I find.

of course I also have a box of USB optical mice...

Jim, if you NEED a PS2 optical mouse (laser, no "ball") I'll send you one if you just PM me your mailing adress

Ditto for a USB to PS-2 adapter (I have one in my pocket as I type this reply)

Most new USB mice include the USB-to-PS2 adapter in the package.

But what I really recommend is you go to newegg and BUY a shiny new Logitech "Trackman Wheel mouse" it is a trackball mouse with a scrolling wheel
they usually run $25-ish and like all others include the adapter.

On a home computer used for a specific dedicated purpose I would strongly discourage getting ahy kind of "cordless" mouse...

There is one advantage to a cord... you KNOW that if you follow the cord you'll find where on your desk your mouse has become burried in the most recent "Crap-alanche"

I just ordered a Bluetooth mouse for my notebook computer (which has built-in bluetooth and thus a cordless mouse won't tie up one of my USB ports) And I'm
taking bets to see how long it'll be before I find myself buying another...

If Allan can't get the adapter to you, I have plenty I can send you.

And I second the trackball mouse. I have two... love them. The cordless is a lot nicer but you don't have to keep batteries on hand for the corded one.

Does win98 support the newer mice? Can't remember exactly, but there were issues with compatiblity with some of the newer drivers...or was that wifi mice?

I'd wonder if he could make his software run on a newer operating system... say XP....

If so I have half a dozen Dell GX280SFF computers that would only require a
HDD (SATA) and a couple hours of my time to make it into a running system
with either XP-sp3 or Vista Buisness SP2

they aren't anything super special, they are 2.8GHz "Prescott" P4's but they are fast enough to make them seem like a jet fighter compared to anything older.
(essentially anything built with Win98)

Particularly if you keep them to a minimalistic installation.
(and on Vista remember to manually turn system restore OFF)

FIrst of all you shouldnt be using a mouse to make labels, Little chinese men work much faster.

If you cant do the chinese guy and are that sick of the mouse, try a gerbil.:yahoo:

Jim, Did you get this resolved? I'll send you a ps2 mouse. I'm dismanteling my puppy linux box. It's going to goodwill, the mouse can go to you.

i've got a half dozen USB to PS2 adapters sitting in front of me too if you want one

personal suggestion is logitech optical trackman for a trackball (my mouse at home) and microsoft natural laser series mice if you dont want the trackball

the design and button config of the logitech is IMO the best i've used for an every day mouse

I have a logitech tracman wheel mouse (there is also a scroll wheel on it)
and love it to death.

I just wish they made a bluetooth version so I could have one for my Notebook without typing up a USB port.

BTW, anyon who watches "deadliest catch"

Look close on the bridge of the FV Northwestern there's what is unmistakably
a Logitech Tracman wheel mouse under Sig's Right hand:)
