a year or so ago i had an 86 bronco II 4x4 with an automatic in it and about every 2 weeks it would blow the front seal out of the transmission it did it twice, then the third time my dad put the seal in he put jb weld around it and i traded it for a 4-wheeler (the guy knew about the trany problems and jb weld) then for the next two weeks it ran great and then cabloie the trany came out of it. iv just always wondered what happened down in there that would make the front seal blow out. but for some more back ground it had set for three years but it only turned over a couple times before it started we were never hard on it heck we only went off-roading in it once. but other than that it was a great little truck and it would go like a billy goat every day i miss it alittle more:bawling:

if the bell housing is warped or the input shaft isn't aligned right to the tc and flywheel it'll chew front seals out left and right.

I opened up the return passages for the front seat...it is a known problem

Could also be the puke tube was clogged, and when it get hot, it builds pressure and something has to give, or at least I think that would happen.

Yea my 86 did the same thing it was a restriction in the cooling system a in line filter put in by the people who rebuilt the tranny for the p/o.It takes a tiny amount of restriction to pop it out.Wound up putting a manual and a 4.0 in there happy now.

Other classic issue with the front seals. Quite a few never "Stake" the seal into place. If it's an A4LD? It's a must-do to hold the seal in place. Other types in service have enough metal where the seal rests to hold it into place. A4LD's have only about 1/8" of alum. to hold it in. Get that hot a couple of times? And the seal will pop. Stake it into place in 4 places (like a cross) And it'll hold pretty well.

Other point of fail? The crankshaft spacer. If it's egg shaped or cracked? The torque converter will ride slightly cockeyed and eat the seal apart.

the seal was never ate up it just came out and when we took it apart it would be stickin out or just laying there and we would shove it back in and put every thing back to gether and it was fine, for a while then it would come back out.

Just described the reason the A4LD's need to have the seal "Staked" into place.

If it was? Then excessive pressure would be the next problem to look into.

Could be a number of things suggested. I've not seen every problem these ol' beasts can develop--not by a long shot LOL.
