I got right in the eye, the right eye....

Time to go look up Dr. Jan Itor.

Go to the doctor now, if you don't like wearing a mask you'll hate wearing an eye patch after you lose the eye.

Im fine with a mask, the covid police at work makes us wear kn95's at all times all day. I have good insurance. Im only time poor. Now Im just debating if I should to go the ER, or an eye doctor. Probably the ER if its empty.

Called out work, now just waiting for the sun to rise, and maybe find a ride.

Also my best friend and tenant just had a major stroke. never a dull moment.

I had that happen last summer. It was a little dot of steel from an angle grinder. Definitely go in to the doc. They will put your head in a vise thing and look at it close, numb it, then scrape out any crud left in there and wash it good. He said mine was very close to going through the outer layer and if it had I would lose the eye. Also lucky it was on the edge of my field of vision. You'll probably get antibiotics to discourage infection. I went in the day after and an infection had already started.

He said they don't use patches much any more as they create a nice environment for infection. Just drops. I wear a face shield in addition to glasses while grinding or using sanding discs, etc. I like my binocular vision and don't want to lose it due to carelessness.

This thread reminds me that I need to replace my face shield. My old MAC Tools one broke while I was building my tire carrier over the summer. I stepped on it when it probably should have been on my head.

They can be hard to find around here. People bought them all up when this craziness started.

Yes I need to upgrade my shield as well...regular safety glasses aint enough apparently.

Im going to a doctor for sure, just deciding which one. I may just hit the local ER if its empty. I just put the word out for referalls, maybe someone will chime in on where to go.

maybe someone will chime in on where to go.

At this point a doctor who advertises on Craigslist and works out of a van down by the river would be a significantly better choice than continuing to wait...

Good thing your head wasn’t in it at the time.

Eddo, I have taken to wearing goggles in lieu of safety glasses (or over them). I have a good pair of glasses and would trust them in a direct impact scenario, but as I learned this summer sanding, bleaching, and painting the house they are crap if you are in a cloud of floating irritants. If I'm doing something that would really be a high energy event I'll put on my welding hood, otherwise I'ts the goggles.

I concur. Mine was infected already after a few hours, and apparently eye infections can be tough to control. There's also the risk of working something in deeper/tearing and making the injury worse. I don't remember where I saw it, but I believe eye juice is one thing we haven't figured out how to replace synthetically and I don't belive the body can replenish it either, so if it pops it's game over.

Wear I work safety glasses go on before you enter the floor. Any and all gloves must come off near the machining area. Masks go on when you leave the floor and enter the offices. Violate those rules as a civilian and you're sent home for the day or if you're active duty you go sit in the office for the rest of the day and watch old safety videos from the 80s on VHS tapes while someone comes in every 15 minutes to scream at you.

I put a copy of "A Garfield Halloween" in one of the VHS tape cases and threw out the video about how to stock a first aid kit that was in it. I'm still waiting for someone to screw up and get to watch Garfield...

But anywhoozle, wear your dang glasses. I find safety glasses more comfortable than full face sheilds which makes you more likely to keep them on the entire time and not just grab them when it's "convenient". But if you're doing serious grinding or beating where shards can fly off there's no reason to not slap a face shield on too.

For what it's worth, my injury happened with safety glasses on. Grinding and stuff is definitely time for a shield of some sort. I'm much more diligent about it now. As said before, they can be hard to find, but honestly even the chincy ones that are supposed to be for 'COVID protection' are better than nothing in my opinion.

If you weld, even most crappy auto darkening welding helmets these days have a grind mode which just puts it at around a shade #3. That's what I use for a face shield. Definitely more protection than a flimsy clear plastic face shield.

Safety glasses need to have side shields to be somewhat effective. But stuff still bounces around them and into the eyes. Like Dirtman said, for high energy activities like grinding or high speed drilling milling and lathe work, add the face shield. They're a lot cheaper than eye injuries.
