I got a plane

You're returning me to my miss spent youth: Neighbor on next farm over restored deHavilland Tiger Moth's. Below is link to plane I worked the most on:

http://www.warplane.com/vintage-aircraft-collection/aircraft-history.aspx?aircraftId=56

I traded labor for flying time. Nothing reinforced physics concepts to me like flying a biplane.

From what I've heard, commercial doesn't pay very well until you make it to the big guys... And ex-military tend to have inside track.

Very cool!

When I was in my late teens and early 20's I was in Civil Air Patrol which is an auxilary of the Air Force. One of the neat things about it is that every summer they had a flight encampment, where you could learn how to fly a glider, or a powered small craft (like your Cessna) or a hot air balloon. I actually solo'd in a glider and learned to fly in a Cessna 172. I have also flown a Citabria 2 seater as well. Fun times, I really do wish I would have went further and got my license, but damn if planes aren't expensive...

Enjoy the wings, and if you ever fly up to Indianapolis area, give me a holler and a plane ride :)

Well they are actually hurting for pilots now, and Jet Blue even has a school set up.

I'll make some utub videos once I get the go pro setup.

Kinda why I dropped out of it. I had to do something and right after 9/11 (I was in ground school during 9/11) and the commercial industry tanked. I went for engineering instead.

Sounds good, make sure you use a good tether so you don't lose the camera. :icon_thumby:

It pays good, my grandpa is a retired Delta Pilot, he flew for about 30 years with them.

I'm going to mount it inside on top of the instrument panel.

When it was becoming time to decide what I wanted to do (graduated HS in '03) the airline industry was in turmoil, bankruptcies, mergers and layoffs galore. It didn't look very promising at the time.

I figured it would eventually work out but of course it is hard to say when exactly that would happen. At any rate it isn't a great environment to jump out of college into... so I went into Engineering and basically did the same thing there during the notso-great recession a few years later. :buttkick:

The next day we tore it apart for it's annual, and I also cleaned it up.

It also needs off-road lighting and more suspension travel.

The only thing broken on it was the DG which there is a new one coming friday to put on.
Also I did a bits of internet snooping and found some photos of it early on.

Lookie here.
The prop and spinner are now painted.
New DG is installed, new labels on the panel. Re-glued more trim pieces.
Also I have 2 videos of my takeoff and landing, if anyone wants to see them I can upload them to utub.

It would be interesting to have him installed in the plane.

No, it's a directional gyro. It uses a vacuum to operate, it shows your heading.

Ok, I know it now. I was just drawing a blank.

Update:
I will put more pictures next week but there is still some more stuff to be done on the plane but we are almost finished.
So first we replaced and riveted the new tail piece, the old one was cracked and falling off.
Its all sealed up and painted (can't find an "aged white" color so this was as close as I could get.)

Getting ready for engine work.

We are going to put on some new motor mounts and I cleaned the air filter. Also painted some baffling.

Some other things we are working on: Took off the cracked wingtip and fiberglassed and bonded it together then sanded and painted. Took off a piece of plastic on the underside on the rudder since it was being held together with speed tape, and bough a new piece from Texas Aeroplastics. It's sanded painted and drilled, but needs to be riveted on.
Fixed the headliner plastic.
New cam-lock mounts for the cowling. (Works pretty good)
I put on new stickers for the yoke, so it looks brand new and I put a new fuel cap chain on.
We still have to put on the electric clock, and we have hubcaps coming for the wheels.
