ok long story short, i was talking to my dad about what i want to do to the truck, and he asked some questions that really i dont have an answer to.....

1. how come when doing the 4.0 swap into a first gen. you have to swap the dash? (like what is so different that it has to happen)

2.is it cheaper to flash the comp, or buy donor car with right comp?

3. why do i have to splice wires if i am using the complete wireing harness from the donor explorer??

1) I'm assuming you got the 4.0L out of a mid 90's truck (EDIT: just reread...your Explorer has this system), which has the OBDII computer system. The speedometer is no longer mechanical, and it has a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) instead, so you need that readout. Between all the temperature sensors and the computer and the plugs and the timing with the DIS, you want the new gauge cluster. The dash itself is not needed, but I don't know how you'll fit it all nicely into your old square dash. Ha.

2.) Depends on where you buy it and how much your buy it for. I would recommend getting the donor for a couple hundred, with all the goodies and parts if you ever need it.

3.) The Explorer has a PATS security system, and the wiring doesnt completely line up. Are you using the old Explorer computer as well?

well i was thinking if i get (my job isn't finish so i have not been payed, just looking at my options) a working donor with or without pats and used the comp. and its wiring harness, then why would i need to splice?
