Is there any way to identify a dana 60 rear axle by the numbers on the diff itself? It says the bill of materials is located on the axle tube but i couldnt find them. Its supposedly a ff 30 spline the guy thinks it may be from an old power wagon.

BOM should be on the axle tube. If you can get your hands on it, just pull a shaft out.

It is an 8 lug full width axle 67" WMS IIRC
I was able to find a set of numbers on one of the axle tubes but they are pretty worn and don't match anything I have seen on the web.

M I R I D 5 1 2 7 0

Not sure about the M or the 5

these are the numbers and the orientation to the diff cover that I see when looking at the differential cover cast into the housing.(if it makes sense to anyone here):icon_confused:

just pull a shaft.

I can pull a shaft to find out what spline it is, but will it tell me any other info other than spline count etc?

Im mostly concerned with trying to find replacement parts and seals, shaft upgrades and or spares, diff cover(are all 60's the same pattern?), and disc brake kit etc.

I have heard there are a ton of differences between years and makes of dana 60 axles. If parts aren't "universal and interchangeable" or at least for the most part, than I need to know what the axle came from.

a D60 is a D60 for the most part. You shouldnt have an issue finding anything.

Thanks for the replies, actually haven't seen those particular links, most of what came up when I searched were dead ends or front axle information. I will check further into this today and let you know what I find.

:temper:I wire wheeled the rear side of the passenger axle tube but the numbers just dont show up. What I can tell you is its a 30 spline full floater, 5.38s, lockright. The axle has been sitting for some time but everything seems to be in good shape besides the "peeled back" diff cover and the e brake tabs on the drums are busted. So twin 60's it is...and now I have work to do.

pretty cool how effortlessly these ff shafts come out
