i was reving my motor and it it hit the rev limiter and all of a sudden started making a clanking noise so i shut it off. i started it up and it sounded like something was smacking against each other. i mean this wasnt a tiny tapping noise it was loud. ao i thought it might be a valve because it still had the same amount of power as before. i started driving it and my clutch started scretching when i pushed the pedal in and was having trouble dissengaging it. i started to head back home cause i knew something was seriously wrong. the whole time i could hear the loud tapping and i also heard the clutch squeaking and chattering. i looked under the ruck through an opening and the clutch and all components were still attatched and i didnt see anything bad. so i tried to make it home and got half a mile and the motor just died. i gave it gas but it felt like i just turned the ignition off. i tried to start it and it just made a bunch off noise and wouldnt start. i could smell gas when cranking it over. i checked again and the flywheel and clutch were still atached to the crank and looked okay. so what could be the cause for the tapping, the clutch failing, and the motor dying, all within 15 minutes?

pull the valve cover and check to make sure you didn't lose a rocker .Sometimes they fall off and get lodged under the cam.Pull the plugs and check and make sure you have air pushing out of the holes.Do a compression test if you have a gauge. The clutch or the pressure plate may have come apart at the rpms also

it is not blowing any oil out of the block is it?

no it doesnt blow any oil aout, but it wont run anymore. i think i fried the ignition system cause i can smell gas, and i'll check under the valve cover.

i pulled off the timing belt cover and found the timing belt ripped. so my guess is that what ever broke must have been up under the valve cover. and when i tried to drive it when it was making noise something must have locked the cam up and the timing belt broke. does this sound right?

You have to just tear it down and start looking. If you're lucky it was just the timing belt that broke.

IMHO, you are screwed.
Most likely you "dropped" a valve and broke a bottom end bearing or crankshaft bearing.
A ripped timing belt alone cannot cause the clutch problems you felt.

4 cylinder right?
This is a non-interference engine, so if you brake the belt only, the motor dies and you coast to a stop nice and quiet like.

should i pull the valve cover off and then the head? also, why did the clutch fail, it was a brand new duralast?

I wouldn't even bother trying to do anything with the engine still in the truck. I'd pull it and start a full tear down.

Pull the valve cover, quick way to see whats going on under there.Did you just put a clutch in it?

okay, and yes i just put a brand new clutch and flywheel in and had no problems with it. it started to fail right when the motor was tapping for a little bit. could the intense vibration from the tapping have broke the clutch or it might be the slave cylinder, i havent torn anything apart yet so im not sure what part of the clutch system failed.

I would get in the clutch area and see whats there.Sounds like the clutch or pressure plate came apart also

and fwiw, duralast=duracrap in my experience. i never buy parts from autozone.
