so my 87 ranger has the old d28, but i just swapped in a 4.0 so im looking for a d35. the problem is that i have 4.10 gears (and plan to keep it that way) and i cannot find a d35 with 4.10 gears. would a hybrid with 4.10' be any easier to find? can i use a d28 locker in a hybrid diff? my only problem is that the shafts keep failing at the u-joint, so a hybrid should take care of that right? then somewhere down the road swap in a d35 3rd if i ever find one... does this sound like a good plan or am i asking for trouble?

Yes a 4.10 hybrid will be much easier to find, dunno about the locker but I wouldn't lock it anyways, you're moving the failure point to the neck down at the splines. If you want the front end to hold up, lock the rear, makes the front axle do much less work.

It's not really the locker I'd worry about it'd be the 4L. The 4L has gobs of torque low. The locker will strian the shafts, but that also depends on what size, and how wide a tire you are running.

The locker should fit.

If you want 4.10's, better brakes, stronger shafts and joints, and don't off road hardcore, then a hybrid....might work

not having a locker or not wheeling it might better for it.

If you had a 2.3, 3.0, or 2.9..... I'd say go for it.

right now im only running 31x10.5's and im probably gonna stick to a fairly small tire. i wouldnt mind moving up to a 32 or 33 but im not lifting it any more than it already is, so whatever i run will be determined by how much fender i cut out. i have a 31 spline 8.8 to swap in with a fairly tight trac-lok. i kinda wish it was open so i could just toss in a locker but i got a hell of a deal on it so i cant really complain. i still wanna lock the front eventually though. maybe ill just stick to an open hybrid till i can find a d35 to lock. i guess it just depends on what i can find.

I dunno what your budget is but you could find a D35 in a junk yard and then buy some 4:10 gears and master install kit etc and have it regeared by someone, unless you know how to yourself. I'm gonna say a hybrid D35 isn't worth it to dump money in or to risk using (because of failure). Thats just what I would do tho...

If you break it your gonna have to find a D35 and regear it anyway, might as well start off on the right foot, but thats just my stand on the subject.

Its always less money to do whats right at first, as opposed to doing one thing to try and save money, to avoid what should be done.

Oh and side note, when the front is locked, its less prone to breakage (in my experience) due to the fact you are no longer spinning tires and shock loading the hell out of everything when the wheel with least traction finds some. Having a locked front really isn't putting much more stress on it. That isn't to say that you can't bust a shaft being stupid with the wheels cranked and pinned up against a rock with alot of skinny pedal....That will break a shaft etc for sure. Fact of the matter is, the 4.0L has tons of torque in 4low, and locked or not if your not driving with your head you can break shhttuff all day long.

I agree. Don't bother with the hybred. Even if you can find one with 4:10's. Find a complete D-35, regear it, lock it, put the bigger 560-X u-joints in and either tack weld the caps or install full circle clips. The thing that will kill your front axles is u-joint failure 9 times out of 10. Don't hammer it with the wheels turned full lock and never hammer it in reverse. With a full-time locker, I might even go as far as popping it out of 4x4 for tight turns where traction is adequate.
